Some Wikipedians have formed a project to expand and organise information better in articles related to the sport of cricket. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help but don't know what to do, see the Welcome page, or inquire on our talk page. You may sign up for the project on the Participants list, and add your name here and here if cricket is your favourite sport.

We are in search of graphic artists for cricket-related diagrams. Those who know something about women's cricket, please sign up.

This WikiProject aims to:

Increase the number of well-written cricket-related articles
Expand and improve other cricket-related articles
Ensure that all cricket-related articles can be easily found by interested readers
Keep Portal:Cricket and Current sports events up-to-date for international matches and when Championships and Trophies are decided in the Test playing nations
Keep Recent deaths and Current sports events up to date when notable cricketers die. (As usually there are newspaper obituaries written when a cricketer dies, it is also an opportunity to improve the Wikipedia article on that cricketer.)
Coordinate efforts and peer review articles
Expand the biographies on every man who has played Test and ODI (all cricketers who have played in at least one Test (Recent changes) or at least one ODI (Recent changes) have an article)

The oldest cricket bat is awarded in recognition of sterling contributions to WikiProject Cricket. This award was introduced by jguk on 14 August 2005 but may be awarded by any WikiProject Cricket participant.

The general consensus appears to be to use Template:Infobox Cricketer for cricketers who have played both Test and ODI cricket. An example of how to code this can be found at Template:Infobox Cricketer/fields.
The general consensus appears to be to use Template:Cricketer Infobox for cricketers who have played only ODI cricket. An example of how to code this can be found at Template talk:Cricketer Infobox.
Template:Infobox Historic Cricketer can be used for cricketers who have played Test matches but not ODIs, before the number of balls in an over was standardised to six: this template has 'balls bowled' rather than 'overs bowled'.
Template:Infobox Historic Cricketer (Overs) can be used for cricketers who have played Test matches but not ODIs, after the number of balls in an over was standardised to six.
Template:Infobox Old Cricketer can be used for cricketers who have played first-class games, but not Test matches, ODIs or List A one-day games.
Template:Infobox Cricketer (Career) can be used to provide first-class and List A statistics for a player who has not played any international cricket, or for an international player with a long article who already has Template:Infobox Cricketer.

[edit] Criteria guideline for article inclusion

WikiProject Cricket participants have adopted the following guidelines for notability of a cricket person for an article in Wikipedia:

has appeared in at least one Test, ODI, ICC Trophy match from 2005, or ICC Trophy final prior to 2005 as player, umpire, coach or administrator
has appeared in at least one first-class or List A match as a player

Please note that the failure to meet these criteria does not mean an article must be deleted; conversely, the meeting of any of these criteria does not mean that an article must be kept. These are merely rules of thumb which some editors choose to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to keep an article that is on articles for deletion. In particular, players from the early days of cricket (such as those from before the 19th century) cannot meet these criteria as they pre-date the era of first-class cricket - notable pre-19th century players and benefactors should also have pages.

Also, please keep in mind that the article in question must actually document that the criterion is true. It is not enough to make vague claims in the article or rant about person's importance on a talk page or VfD page -- the article itself must document notability.

[edit] Cricket article style guide

Whilst naming and editing cricket-related articles, editors often encounter recurring questions of style. Wikiproject Cricket participants have agreed to the following style guidelines to keep a consistent look and feel to cricket articles throughout Wikipedia. These styles also fall within the WP:MOS guidelines and WP:NC policies.

Always use capital T when referring to Test cricket.
If linking "Test" or "Test match", link to Test cricket, not to Test or Test match (which are just disambiguation pages).
The first two words are hyphenated in first-class cricket, one-day cricket and One-day International; the "One" and "International" in One-day International are capitalised, the "day" is not.
Tournaments are named with the year first, so 2007 Cricket World Cup not Cricket World Cup 2007; cricket tours are named "[visiting team] in [host nation] in [cricket season]": for example, New Zealand cricket team in Zimbabwe in 2005-06
Where a person is best known by their initials and surname (as in W. G. Grace), use either W. G. Grace or WG Grace, depending on the article creator's personal preference, and always create a redirect to the other style. Avoid using W.G. Grace, W G Grace, W.G.Grace or William Gilbert Grace. (see unresolved debate & vote at WP:Naming conventions, and discussion)
When referring to a cricket season spanning two years, use an hyphen (or an en dash) and the last two digits of the second year as in International cricket in 2005-06 or New Zealand cricket team in Zimbabwe in 2005-06. However, if the years do not begin with the same two digits, write out the full year: 1899-1900.
Bowling format: Use "5/100", which indicates that a bowler has captured 5 wickets while giving away 100 runs.
disputed Team score format: Adopt the consensus style of writing in the host country of the tournament, i.e. 1/141 or one for 141 for matches in Australia, and 141/1 or 141 for one for most other countries. Use slashes when shortening scores. The alternative view is that we should be consistent throughout all articles and use the style used in all countries other than Australia.
When referring to national teams, link the name to the team page of that country, not the general article about that country; e.g., England not England. Similarly for domestic teams.
The statistics given for players include all matches recognised by the ICC, such as the 2005 Super Series and the Tsunami ODI. The article can of course also mention statistics derived in different ways where relevant.
Commonwealth English spellings are preferred in most cricket-related articles.
Use the example templates in /Templates where appropriate.
Templates for use on player articles should have a width of 80%.
