Free the Slaves
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Free the Slaves is an international non-governmental organization and lobby group, established to campaign against the modern practice of slavery around the world. It is the U.S. sister-organization of Anti-Slavery International. The organization was created as a result of research done by Dr. Kevin Bales in his groundbreaking book, Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy. Free the Slaves’ approach is a focused strategy in the context of efforts around the world to enable people to meet their basic needs. Access to economic opportunities, health services, universal education, and strong rule of law would reduce the vulnerability of poor people to enslavement. Free the Slaves fully support these efforts while recognizing that the existence of slavery calls for a specific and direct approach to its eradication.
Working with Partner Organizations: They work with grassroots anti-slavery organizations by funding their work and enabling local movements around the world to learn from each other.
Raising Awareness: They increase awareness of contemporary slavery by providing engaging ways to learn about the subject. This includes a video library, web site, educational materials for schools and community groups, and public presentations.
Promoting Slave-Free Trade: They partner with concerned businesses and NGOs to eradicate slavery from product supply chains and build a consumer movement that chooses slave-free goods.
Educating Policy-Makers: They work with governments to enforce effective anti-slavery and anti-trafficking laws, and where necessary, draft new legislation.
Researching: They research modern slavery in order to determine its scope and nature, and to formulate targeted ways to combat it. e
