Gábor Egressy (actor)

Gábor Egressy [ˈgaːbor ˈɛgrɛʃi] (* 1808 in Sajólaszlófalva in the former Komitat Borsod; † 30 July 1866 in Pest) was a Hungarian actor and brother of Beni Egressy.

His date of birth is not known exactly. After he belongs to several rover actor ensembles, he found at the theater in Klausenburg a permanent engagement. Later he fulfilled his artistic education in Wien and was since 1837 one of the most important actors at the new opened Hungarian National Theater in Pest.
The dramas of Shakespeares he brought at the Hungarian stage in his mother tongue.
In the turbulent revolution of 1848 and 1849 he was sent as a government commissar in the lower-Tisza area, but caused of too much rigour was recalled. He returned to the stage, but escaped to Turkey after the repression of the revolution. In 1854 he was allowed to return, exempt from punishment.
Gábor Egressy's brother Béni Egressy was an actor too.
