The place Gilead is mentioned in the African American spiritual song, Balm in Gilead. The balm of Gilead is a healing compound made from the resinous gum of Populus candicans. It takes its name from the product now known as balsam of Mecca, whose name is linked with Gilead in the Old Testament.
