[edit] Gunshot sound
A typical rifle gunshot is very loud — in the region of 140 to 170 decibels. This can be lowered to around 115 db through the use of a suppressor and subsonic ammunition.
A 9mm gunshot can be described as having a "Buka" "Buka" sound as described in "Under Pressure" a song by the late Tupac Shakur. This sound is also referenced in the Ali G Show in which "Buka" is described as a sound made when you shoot a gun.
[edit] Gunshot as distress signal
Some doctrines of survival training allow for the use of three gunshots with an interval of one or two seconds as a distress signal. However, it should be noted that whether aimed straight up or not, stray bullets do occasionally injure or kill individuals once they fall back to the earth. Here are some examples of this happening:
- Participant at KKK initiation wounded after shots fired into sky (CNN article)
- Orlando man killed by stray bullet during New Year's celebration (News 4 Jacksonville, Florida, USA article)
- Shooting in the air: turning celebration into tragedy (Internation Network on Small Arms article)
- County worker hit by stray bullet (Mount Vernon, Ohio, USA News article)
- Hunter's bullet blamed in death, woman killed in Fayette home (Pittsburg, PA, USA Post Gazette article)
