[edit] Life and work
Born in Elberfeld (now Wuppertal), Tappert joined the army for Germany in the Second World War. He gave his stage debut in Stendal, Germany, playing Dr. Stribel in Helwig's Die Flitterwochen.
From 1945 to 1947 he followed courses of comedy. In the following years, he changed time of theatre to find himself in 1956 in Theatre of Munich. Independent actor since 1967, it takes part, today still, with many rounds.
End of the Fifties begins for him a career with the cinema and television. He takes part in many films of Edgard Wallace ("Jerry Cotton"). His big breakthrough was in 1966 with the television show in three parts Die Gentlemen bitten zur Kasse. From there it is subscribed with the roles of gentleman gangster until finally the role of Derrick decides of its career.
The character of Stephan Derrick became a cult figure all over the world.
Thanks to Derrick, Horst Tappert is the only German actor who has ever had fan clubs abroad. And since these clubs are also to be found in Holland and France, it can be said without any exaggeration that Horst Tappert, in addition to his role on television, has become an unofficial ambassador for the Federal Republic of Germany.
Tappert, who played the main role for almost 25 years (1974-1998), had reached the age limit he had set himself. At 75 he retired from the TV screen.
Divorced twice, he lives now in Gräfelfing near Munich with his third wife Ursula Pistor (since 1957). He is the father of three children (Karin, Ralph and Gary).
In December 2001, one of Tappert's sons, Gary, died of organ failure after having gone into a coma. He was 52, and an architect.
