מסתבר שהעסק לא פשוט כל כך. כאן כתוב:
- "On a voyage to Aegina he was captured by pirates, conveyed to Crete and exposed for sale as a slave. When he was asked what he could do he replied, "Govern men." And he told the crier to give notice in case anybody wanted to purchase a master for himself."
לעומת זאת במקום אחר מספרים שהוא נקנה ושוחרר ואין זכר לציטטה המפורסמת. אתר נוסף שנגיש רק דרך ה-cache של גוגל כרגע, מספר את אותו הסיפור אבל מוסיף כי ייתכן שהוא מומצא:
- "Another important, though possibly invented, episode in Diogenes’ life centers around his enslavement in Corinth after having been captured by pirates. When asked what he could do, he replied “Govern men,”"
