[edit] Route description
Although I-195 begins at Interstate 95, the actual freeway starts at an intersection with Maryland Route 166 near Catonsville. The area of the intersection includes a park and ride, as well as a wye interchange with UMBC Drive. After interchanging with I-95, the route continues southeast to interchange with U.S. Route 1. After the interchange, I-195 crosses I-895 (the Harbor Tunnel Thruway) with no connection whatsoever. After crossing the Patapsco River, the route interchanges with the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Maryland Route 170 (which is part of the "Airport Loop").
The speed limit for most of I-195 is 60 miles per hour; there is a sudden drop in the speed limit to 30 miles per hour as the route enters and terminates at the Airport.
I-195 was completed in 1990 after five years of construction.

[edit] History
The first part of I-195 to be constructed was the segment between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the airport itself, then known as Friendship International Airport. This segment was designated Maryland Route 46.
The second part of I-195 to be constructed was the segment between Maryland Route 166 and U.S. Route 1; this segment was built as part of the construction of I-95 between the Baltimore Beltway and the Capital Beltway, and opened alongside the connecting portion of I-95 in 1971, leaving a gap between U.S. 1 and the B-W Parkway. It is unclear if the I-195 designation was ever applied to the disjoint segments of the freeway at this time; MDOT SHA maps from before 1990 show the northern segment as part of MD 166 and the southern segment as MD 46.
Eventually, the gap was closed with a pair of bridges over the Patapsco River, which were opened in June 1990, thus completing I-195 in its entirety.
[edit] Notes
- The mileposts on I-195, and thus the exit numbers, run contrary to the cardinal directions used; the zero milepost is at BWI and the mileposts ascend towards I-95.
- Although westbound I-195 ends at I-95, eastbound I-195 appears to begin at MD 166; trailblazers marking I-195 on the eastbound carriageway appear immediately after turning onto the route from MD 166.
