Interstate 296 (abbreviated I-296) is a 3.4 mile, unsigned, urban north-south Interstate Highway entirely within Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. Its termini are Interstate 96 on the north side of Grand Rapids and Interstate 196 near downtown Grand Rapids. It wholly coincides with U.S. Highway 131, itself a long-distance freeway into which it feeds to and from seamlessly. The designation Interstate 296 is thus superfluous, and any signs for it have long been removed.
[edit] Route description
The freeway begins with the I-196 interchange where the 3 north bound lanes are on the left and the 3 south bound lanes are on the right. This gets flip flopped after ramps for the I-196 are passed as the south bound lanes go over the north bound lanes. The freeway is 3 lanes in each direction the entire length. It gets a grassy median north of Ann St. The freeway then splits with the left lane going to I-96 and the right lane going with US-131, with the center lane getting a choice of either freeway. The southbound lanes start at two different spots along I-96. For east bound I-96 it gets started just east of Alpine Ave/M-37. For west bound it starts with the US 131 freeway interchange about a mile east of Alpine Ave/M-37.
