[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia!
Hello, Internazionale, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia is one of the world's fastest growing internet sites. We aim to build the biggest and most comprehensive encyclopaedia in the world! To date we have over four million articles in a host of languages. The English language Wikipedia alone has 1,444,217 articles! But we still need more! Please feel free to contribute your knowledge and expertise to our site.
Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial (this is really great for getting used to editing Wikipedia)
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Also, don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! It might be a good idea to read this to see how you can avoid making common mistakes, though.
Just to give you a really basic overview so you don't make any mistakes early:
- Wikipedia keeps a neutral point of view policy, meaning that all contributions must not be biased one way or the other. Even if both biases are presented, it is still not allowed on Wikipedia.
- Only public domain resources can be copied directly to Wikipedia without permission — this does not include most web pages.
- Be bold! In my opinion, this may be Wikipedia's most important policy. Go ahead and edit a page! Don't worry about "ruining" other's work, this is a wiki! (Of course, major changes should probably be proposed on talk pages to achieve consensus, but don't be scared!)
We hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please always sign your name on talk pages (but not articles!) using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the time and date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}}
on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome! —Mets501 (talk) 14:33, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
Hi, and welcome to the Countries WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of countries.
There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:
- Starting some new articles? See some model pages such as Cambodia!
- Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every country article in Wikipedia.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Shy1520 23:03, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject Airports
Welcome to Wikipedia:WikiProject Airports! Thanks for joining, and there are plenty of things to do listed on the project page when you're ready to help out! —Mets501 (talk) 14:33, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Greetings
Thanks for the greetings, I spent a bit of time here, though rather inactively; your welcome is appreciated, even if from a Metropolitans fan. A question re: airports but really about images in general. So many of the airports images, and indeed most any of these types of articles will not have "common" images to take from, I take it that those images found on websites are in questionable waters as far as copyright is concerned, what is the compromise? I would think that otherwise the majority of our images would be ruled out?Internazionale 15:09, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
- Wikipedia can only use images which are licensed under a free license (free as in free speech, not as in $0), or copyrighted images which comply with the fair use criteria. In general, however, free images are preferred. You can see Wikipedia:Image copyright issues for dummies for more info :-). —Mets501 (talk) 15:16, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Articles unassessed for importance
Hi, I wanted to apologise, I got busy last week and never copied your question on Core Topics over to the bot page. Did you resolve this issue, or do you still want to pursue this? It seems like a reasonable question; if you'd prefer that I raise it on your behalf I can do that. Please let me know. Thanks, Walkerma 22:57, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hello again - your query about "unassessed for importance" in effect got raised as part of a bigger issue, see Wikipedia_talk:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Index#Articles_by_class_and_importance. Oleg is completely redesigning the output statistics to include more information, including the Importance NAs. I hope this resolves the issue! Thanks for your patience, I've been very focused on Version 0.5 which is hopefully coming out on CD very soon! Walkerma 04:04, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Serie A deletion
You better have a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/La Liga 2006/2007 results December 2006. Basically a non footballing wikipedian has nominated the detailed results sections of Serie A and La Liga for deletion. I'm personally totally against them being deleted. I've voted to keep the pages and I just thought I'd highlight this as you might want to vote either way on this. Thanks Niall123 18:38, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Location Maps
On the WikiProject Countries talk page, you had either explictly declared a general interest in the project, or had participated at a discussion that appears related to Location Maps for European countries.
New maps had been created by David Liuzzo, and are available for the countries of the European continent, and for countries of the European Union exist in two versions. From November 16, 2006 till January 31, 2007, a poll had tried to find a consensus for usage of 'old' or of which and where 'new' version maps. At its closing, 25 people had spoken in favor of either of the two presented usages of new versions but neither version had reached a consensus (12 and 13), and 18 had preferred old maps.
As this outcome cannot justify reverting of new maps that had become used for some countries, seconds before February 5, 2007 a survey started that will be closed at February 20, 2007 23:59:59. It should establish whether the new style maps may be applied as soon as some might become available for countries outside the European continent (or such to depend on future discussions), and also which new version should be applied for which countries.
Please note that since January 1, 2007 all new maps became updated by David Liuzzo (including a world locator, enlarged cut-out for small countries) and as of February 4, 2007 the restricted licence that had jeopardized their availability on Wikimedia Commons, became more free. The subsections on the talk page that had shown David Liuzzo's original maps, now show his most recent design.
Please read the discussion (also in other sections α, β, γ, δ, ε, ζ, η, θ) and in particular the arguments offered by the forementioned poll, while realizing some comments to have been made prior to updating the maps, and all prior to modifying the licences, before carefully reading the presentation of the currently open survey. You are invited to only then finally make up your mind and vote for only one option.
There mustnot be 'oppose' votes; if none of the options would be appreciated, you could vote for the option you might with some effort find least difficult to live with - rather like elections only allowing to vote for one of several candidates. Obviously, you are most welcome to leave a brief argumentation with your vote. Kind regards. — SomeHuman 7 Feb 2007 20:16 (UTC)
