Battles in the North riprende dal punto dove si era fermato l'album precedente, Pure Holocaust; è caratterizzato da riff molto veloci (in alcuni brani si raggiunge la velocità di 235 al metronomo), un cantato molto crudo e testi tematicamente glaciali (peculiarità del gruppo). Ottima la prova di Abbath che si cimenta anche alla batteria. Da Grim And Frostbitten Kingdoms e Blashirk, Mighty Ravendark verranno estratti due video. Analogamente a Pure Holocaust è considerato tra i classici del black metal.
