Rick Rubin

Frederick Jay Rubin (Long Island, 10 marzo 1963) è un produttore discografico statunitense.

Dopo avere suonato la chitarra in un gruppo punk newyorchese (Hose) nei primi anni '80, entrò nella giovane Def Jam, casa discografica legata storicamente all' hip hop. Nel 1984 produsse un EP dei Beastie Boys, Rock Hard, caratterizzato dall'unione di rock ed hip hop: Rick portò in breve tempo questo genere al successo, grazie a Beastie Boys e Run DMC. Licensed to Ill è l'album per eccellenza di questo genere musicale: (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party) e No Sleep Till Brooklyn sono l'emblema di questo nuovo modo di fare musica lanciato da Rick Rubin.
Dalla seconda metà degli anni '80, egli collaborò soprattutto con gruppi rock e metal. Famoso è il suo lavoro con gli Slayer (con cui ancora oggi Rubin collabora), avendo prodotto un disco storico dell'Heavy Metal come Reign in Blood nel 1986 e questa fu la sua prima collaborazione con un gruppo di questo genere. Successivamente, Rubin divenne anche il produttore dei Red Hot Chili Peppers, che videro il loro quinto album (Blood Sugar Sex Magik, del 1991) in vetta alle classifiche americane ed europee per molte settimane. Tra gli altri gruppi che produce ci sono anche i System of a Down, noto gruppo metal di origine armena.
Ultimamente è stato ufficializzato che Rubin sarà il produttore del prossimo album dei Metallica, dato che il gruppo ha accolto una petizione on-line, da parte di tantissimi fans del periodo Thrash del gruppo, contro Bob Rock, da loro accusato di aver contribuito alla commercializzazione della band di San Francisco.
Rubin è noto anche per varie collaborazioni con Johnny Cash, celebre musicista country.
