James Howard Clark was speaker of the Legislature of Ontario in 1939-1943 and served as Liberal MLA for Windsor-Sandwich.

Mr Clark was know as "The Major" as he was a major in the first world war,commanding the heavy machine gun arm of the Canadian army.Fought bravely at Vimy Ridge, Passiondale,The Somme and other major battles. Born in Ingeroll Ontario, app1890. Attended Toronto U, and Osgoode Hall and specialized in criminal law-Set up practise in Windsor Ontario.Home was 1273 Ouellette Ave and 40Martin Lane LaSalle in summer.Loved sport-Managed and coached the army team to an Allen cup in Winnipeg 1917.Became like a brother to Jack Adams of Red Wing fame.Played par golf at Essex Golf Club.Major Clark was a confirmed batchelor as his sweetheart-Amy Semple Macpherson became an evangelist-went to California and became wealthy as a preacher.He adopted William Reaume who married Jessie MacMillan who gave birth to James William Robert Clark,the author of this ,and Constance Louise Clark.The union was short lived and Mr Clark assumed the raising of these two people. Mr Clark was a very colorful man-our household included Mary and Frank Nagy, housekeeper and handy man. There was always two dogs- Pat,a Dane and Fritz,a shepherd-Both huge and protective.The Major had two bouts of cancer-the first,a benign tumor under the left ribcage placed him in hospital 48 days. In 1950 colon cancer killed him slowly.
