Janet Grahame Johnstone and Anne Grahame Johnstone were British children's book illustrators best known for illustrating Dodie Smith's The Hundred and One Dalmatians.
These twin sisters were born on 1 June 1928 to muralist and costume designer Doris Zinkeisen and her husband, Captain Grahame Johnstone. They attended the Heathfield School in Ascot, Berkshire during World War II. Later they attended St Martin's School of Art in London. Their popularity as children's illustrators took off in the early 1950s. They always worked together, passing paintings back and forth until both twins were satisfied with the final outcome. Janet specialized in birds and animals, while Anne focused on costumes. [1]
Janet died in an accident in 1979. Anne died of cancer on 25 May 1998. Neither twin ever married. [2]
