Kay Matheson

Kay Matheson, born 1928 is a participant in the events surrounding the removal of the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1950.
Born in Inverasdale in the western Scottish highlands she became politically active as a young trainee school teacher in Glasgow, through the Scottish Covenant Association. She, along with Ian Hamilton, Gavin Vernon and Alan Stuart (all association members in their early twenties at the time) travelled to London on December 22, 1950 to undertake the removal of the stone.
They successfully removed it from the abbey (although they broke it in two whilst doing so, necessitating its repair by a sympathetic stonemason) and they hid it. It was discovered in April, 1951 after the participants themselves tipped off the authorities (who had been engaged in a massive hunt for the stone) that it would be left for them in Arbroath Abbey.
Matheson was questioned by the police about her involvement, but like the three other participants was never charged in relation to it.
In 1981, Matheson was involved in the Ceartas protest.
She later returned to Inverasdale to work as a teacher at the local primary school. She continues to live in the area.
