Kirie

Kirie is a fictional character from the game Fatal Frame. Kirie was chosen at the age of 7 to be the Rope Shrine Maiden based on a game of Demon Tag. At that time, a group of children were led to the Himuro Mansion and chased by an 'oni' (A Blinded Maiden who was in the last Blinding Ritual). The Himuro family thought Kirie had great holy powers since she was caught last by the oni. Coincidentally, the girl caught first in the game became the next Blinded Woman.
After that game, Kirie went into seclusion for 10 years in hopes that all her Earthly connections would be severed and that she'd have nothing to live for. This makes the maiden more effective for the Strangling Ritual, as they would probably be so lonely they'd want to die. At the end of Kirie's confinement, a handsome man arrived at the Himuro Mansion. Kirie spotted him through her window and when the visitor noticed Kirie, she blushed and hid. Feelings that Kirie have never felt before welled inside her. Kirie started talking to the visitor on her daily garden visits, thus creating a bond to the world in the form of love. Unfortunately, the Himuro Master worried that Kirie's Strangling Ritual would fail due to the Visitors presense and had him killed.
Kirie eventually found out about the murder of her 'lover' (as the game never gave him a proper name, just 'Kirie no Koibito') and felt horribly about it. She felt incredibly guilty over his murder, leading her into a state of doubt. On the day of her ritual, she uttered "I just want to see him one last time!", before being tied down and sacrificed. Kirie's bloody ropes -that were used to close the gates of hell- were weak due to Kirie's wanting to live, doubt in her ability to be a maiden, and guilt over the death of her lover. The malice that Kirie was supposed to prevent from entering the world spilled out from the doors to hell, causing Kirie's spirit to become evil and twisted. At the same time her spirit also split into a younger version of herself, one that knew her duty was to always protect the Earth.
In the end, Miku uses the holy mirror to free Kirie from the malice, and her younger self points to the gates to hell and said, "Don't forget your duty." before disappearing. Kirie uses the snapped rope and hangs herself in front of the gates by her arms, and her back facing to them. Everytime the gate tries to burst open, she would get hit. Mafuyu stays with her as the cave to the hell gate caves in.
[edit] Two Kiries
It has been said that Kirie's last name was Himuro, but it is not confirmed by Tecmo as official.
Young Kirie- She is a spirit untouched by the malice. In the game, she helps Miku Hinasaki solve the mystery of Himuro Mansion and, in the end, reminds her older counterpart of her duties as a Shrine Maiden.
Malice Kirie- She is the tainted version of her former self, a hateful and evil spirit. This Kirie has the malice attached to her back, in the form of angry demons (or ghosts).
