Kurup

The Kurups are a part of the Nair community in Kerala, South India. They are equal to the Panickers and were commanders and generals in battles. They used to be the teachers of the Kalaris or the martial arts training centres. They were highly respected and were in the past extremely powerful.
Kurup is also used by one sect of the Nair responsible to supervise the maids and servants in Temples and Royal Palaces.
The word 'Kurup' is derived from 'Guru'.
