L'Illusion Comique
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
L'Illusion Comique is a comedic play by Pierre Corneille, written in 1636. In its use of meta-theatricality (plays-within-the-play), it is far ahead of its time.
The play has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years, since Tony Kushner adapted it as The Illusion.
As Corneille wrote this play at the age of 29, he had already written 7 other plays for theater including tragedies and comedies. L'illusion comique is definitely a turnaround in Corneille's literary career, since he would write nothing but tragedies after he wrote the play.
