La Franja
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Franja de Ponent o La Franja d'Aragó (Catalan for Western Strip or Aragonese Strip) or La Francha de Lebán ( Aragonese for Eastern Strip), or simply La Franja, refers to four comarques in the east of the Autonomous Community of Aragon, which are in part linguistically Catalan, in contrast to the Castillian (and historically, Aragonese) speaking areas of western Aragon.
Catalan does not currently have an official status in this territory, as in other places in Spain. A law written by the Aragonese coalition government ((Spanish) Ley de lenguas de Aragón) was proposed in order to change this situation, as well as with Aragonese language in other regions in Aragon. However, this is still to be approved.
According to recent studies[1], La Franja is actually one of the territories with the highest oral usage of Catalan language, but with severe deficiences in writing competences because of its lack of officiality and support in education.
