Lake of the Woods is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 833 at the 2000 census.
The city of Lake of the Woods was named by pioneer Mrs. Florence Cuddy. It was established in 1925. One historic document cites a variant name for the community: Lake Mountain Woods. The town is contained in Cuddy Canyon along the Ventura and Kern County line inside Los Padres National Forest. Telephone numbers in Lake of the Woods follow the format (661) 245-xxxx.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 833 people, 346 households, and 217 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 91.4/km² (236.9/mi²). There were 475 housing units at an average density of 52.1/km² (135.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.27% White, 2.16% Native American, 1.92% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 4.92% from other races, and 3.60% from two or more races. 10.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 346 households out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.1 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $42,742, and the median income for a family was $43,468. Males had a median income of $49,306 versus $24,236 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,983. About 13.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.9% of those under age 18 and 18.3% of those age 65 or over.
