This page describes tricks that can done on a standard bike, BMX or Mountain.

[edit] Wheelie

  • Basic
    • Pull back hard on the handlebars while moving your hips foward into the ass or standing still.
  • Advanced
    • Holding a wheelie takes more skill than just keeping the front wheel up for a short time. To perform a "rolling wheelie" pedal forward in low gear and pull back hard on the handlebars. Maintain an upright posture and lean if needed to control balance. Try not to hunch over the handlebars. With more skill the wheelie can be held indefinitely.
  • Landing
    • To land a wheelie lean forward to cause the front end to drop, bringing the front tire back into contact with the ground. Make sure to land with the front wheel pointing straight forward or the bike will attempt to throw the rider off.
  • Terminology:
    • The term 'catwalk' refers to a standing, pedalling wheelie, whereas a 'wheelie' most commonly describes the seated, 'rolling wheelie' variant.
    • The 'coasting' wheelie, described above, in which the rider is neither pedalling nor in contact with the seat, is often also referred to as a 'manual'. (Between UK, USA and Canadian sources, trick names are often confused or interchanged.)

Stoppie/Endo

  • Basic
    • Pedal up to a normal speed and then apply the front brake while leaning forward.
  • Advanced
    • Holding a stoppie takes more skill than just pulling the rear tire up. Once again pedal up to a normal speed and then apply the front brake while leaning forward. Instead of coming to a halt, let off the brake when the rear tire lifts and balance until the bike has run out of momentum.
  • Landing
    • Lean backwards and allow the rear tire to come into contact with the ground. Again try to land with both wheels aligned or the bike may try to throw the rider off.
  • For Extra Points:
    • By throwing the hips to one side as the front brake is grabbed, the bike can be pivoted at least 180 degrees. The trick is to can be converted into another pivot, this time by grabbing the back brake and swinging the front wheel around. Performed smoothly, the move looks like the bike is 'walking' 360 degrees. Do not try any variant of the stoppie or endo without a helmet and gloves.

  • Basic
    • A bunny hop is the building block of nearly all tricks. A bunny hop is when a rider lifts both the bikes wheels off the ground.
      • To do a bunny hop: Ride into this with the pedals LEVELED. Pull up on the handle bars, leaning back over the seat helps to bring the front up in a similar manner to a manual. Next unweight the back of the bike by pushing back and up on the pedals lifting the back end off the ground. To practice this place one foot on the ground and try lifting just the rear wheel up with the other foot. Lift the back wheel up to the same height as the front wheel and prepare to land. Keep the weight central as the hop is done, to avoid nose diving. If the hop is being done off a height, try to land rear wheel first instead of both at the same time.

  • Both the wheelie and chicken hope and is possibly one of the easiest tricks ever if you are able to balance on the backwheel well.
    • Start from a slow jogging pace and pull a small endo. Lock and hold both the brakes throughout the trick. As the rear wheel lands immediately pull up the handle bars and lunge the riders bodyweight backwards resulting in a backhop.
    • Repeat the above step, but this time repeat the lunge on landing so that two successive backhops are performed. From there work up the amount of backhops until as many as desired can be performed. Once perfected, the rider will 'hop' on the rear wheel while stationary, this is the basis of many other tricks. This trick is much more difficult to perform with a dual suspension bike.all this is written by freddy romero
  • Advanced
    • As the above but remove the endo from the equation so that

  • The Can-Can is the oposite to the Nac-Nac.
    • When in mid air take one of ether feet of the pedals.
    • Put the foot over the frame .
    • Then bring the foot back and place back on pedal and land the jump.

    • When in mid air take one of eater feet of the pedals.
    • put that foot that you have taken of the pedal aroud the back tyre and push the bike to a 90 degree turn
    • Then bring the bike back in and place your foot on the pedal and land the jump

[edit] Curb Jump - Front Suspension Bike

A curb jump allows the rider to make a smooth transition from the roadway onto the sidewalk. It is a favorite of Bicycle Messengers, who must ride intensively in an urban setting.

  • Basic - perpendicular to curb
    • The rider aims straight at the curb at speed, standing up on the pedals. In the moment before the front tire is to hit the curb, the rider drops his weight and applies generous downward force to both handlebars and pedals, "pre-loading" the front suspension. The rider then immediately jumps up with the bike as the front suspension springs back, lifting bike and rider onto the sidewalk.But this method dosent work when it comes to riding at slow speed
  • Advanced - parallel to curb
    • The rider travels alongside (or is stopped and balanced beside) the curb, pre-loads the front suspension in the manner above, and jumps in a sideways direction onto the sidewalk.
  • Pro - up and down stairs
    • The rider ascends or descends a set of stairs using successive parallel-to-curb hops as described above.

  • A Backflip if an advanced trick.
    • At the top ot the jump you sould be leaning back.
    • As you start getting air you sould be spining backwards.
    • Keep leaning backward troughout the backflip until you have done a full spin.
    • Once you have done the full spin you sould be starting to levaling out.
    • Levle the bike out then land the jump

How to do a Tailwhip.......

A tailwhip is one of the more advanced tricks that you can do on a BMX, it takes ages to perfect it and loads of hours of practice even just to get part of it. I know of people who have tried doing this trick for ages but sitll haven't landed a perfect one and are still learning and can drop some really cool tricks. its all about trying your hardest and not giving up.

Anyways here is how to do a tailwhip.

Right first find a decent ramp to get a fair bit of air as your only just learning how to do a tailwhip. Then go at this ramp at a fair speed,you need loads of air time to land it the first time. The ramp has to have a landing at the otherside as it is easier than landing it back down on a quarter and such. So as you take of and your back wheel leaves the ramp for some air time try to flatten the bike out and as you do use for back placed foot to flick the back end round as fast as possible, as you flick it pick your legs of the pedals.

Keep your self centered over the bike and in a steady position. The bike should hopefully swing in a full 360 degree spin (if you did it right :P) and as it starts to complete the full spin and come under you, you want to try and place your front foot back on to the pedal and bring the rest of the bike under your and your other leg over the bike to place it onto the back facing pedal. Then straighten your self and the bike out and flatten it and be ready to land. the bike will probably land with the back tire first and front tire a fair height of the ground. This normally happens until your get loads of air or become the Tailwhip master.

So as you see the tailwhip may sound like an easy trick but actually a tailwhip has to be one of the hardest tricks on a bmx(or mountain bike) to do.

[edit] Ledge drop

Dropping off ledges can be taken in four steps:

1.Ride up to the drop at a slow jogging speed. You need to get into the habit of using good technique instead of momentum to get you off the drop safely. iT's easy to just fly off and see what happens, but you'll have little control of the outcome.

2.As the front wheel approaches the lip of the drop, compress your arms ready to pump off the drop. If you have front suspension you can use this compression to load the fork, which can give you a more predictable pop when you lift the wheel and it makes sure you have full travel at your disposal when you land.

3.Tranfer your weight backwards and pop the front wheel off the ground. Aim to get the wheel around six inches higher that the rear but no more. Any higher and you risk flipping off the back when you land. Cover your back brake just in case.

4. When your bike's in freefall, straighten your limbs so you have lots of damping for touch down. Keep the front up and your weight over the back. Compress as you land and shift your weight foward to prevent dying.
