[edit] 2. class gunships (gunboat?)

I've done a bit of reasearch today, and it seems like there was more than seven 2.class gunships in the Norwegian Navy... I've so far identified eight, of three subclasses:

  • Vale class (Vale, Brage, Nor, Uller and Vidar), armed with a 10.5" RLM
  • Gor class (Gor and Tyr), armed with an enourmous 26cm/30 breach loader
  • Æger, which seems to be a class of one ship, armed with a 21cm/35 breach loader

Does anyone have any sources that can verify or disprove this? If not, I'll get on with making articles on the remainding two (Gor and Tyr), as well as articles on the Vale-class and Gor-class, and amend this list to reflect this information. WegianWarrior 09:54, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

This page is the RNoN official web page for history. This page has a day by day history of the RNoN from 1814 to 2005. A lot of info about individual ships and events. They are unfortunately both in Norwegian (but that shouldn't be a problem for you :) ). If you use the search function on the top right of the mil.no website you could find some usefull information. This is were I found info about seven 2. klasse kanonbåt. But it could also mean that there were built seven boats similar to Vale...If you search for kanonbåt you will find info about some of the other gunboats.Inge 13:58, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Five of the Vale[1] subclass and two of the Gor[2] subclass would make sence - the main differnece between the two classes seems to be that the earlier ships used a 10.5" (26.67 cm) RML gun, while the two later used a 26 cm (10.2") Krupp breachloading gun. Otherwise they are remarkable simular in size, displacement and above all armament (one big gun roughtly 26 cm, 3 37mm guns). The Ægir[3] seems quite different, with a smaller main gun and quite different secondary armament. I'll look into it more tomorrow. WegianWarrior 14:32, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where to place these ships?

I've found information on more Norwegian Naval vessels. Some are easy to place, but two are giving me trouble: Frithjof (1895-1928)[4] and Viking (1890-1920)[5]. Both are listed as 'cruisers', but I'm not sure if that is a correct heading (partly because there is no such heading allready, and at least to me, the word 'cruiser' brings up a different mental image). Any options on what subheading to place these under?

Other ships I've found info on, and plan to add in and start articles on, are the frigate Fridtjof Nansen (1928-1940)[6] (likely a coast guard vessel, see entry for 1931 and1931, 1940) and the minelayers Glommen (1916-1950) and Laugen (1918-1950)[7][8]

Please see Frithjof and Viking on U.S. Naval Historical Center. They are listed as "First class gunboat", but that could be wrong. When it comes to Fritjof Nansen I find it unlikely that the RNoN had two ships with the same name at the same time :), it probably is this vessel HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen OPV. I have put some ships in the Other ships subheading, but I hope that will be temporary. Good luck.10:05, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I think that is the same vessel (the name, dates and details match). We might consider a seperate subheading for coast guard vessels built as such - I note the article you point to isn't linked from this list. As for Viking and Frithjof, I'm more than happy to list them as first class gunboats - they seem to fit more or less in the same 'mould' as Ellida and Sleipner (reasonable heavy gun armament, torpedotubes). I'll get on with the articles as I get time - hopefully will at least have one or two done today. WegianWarrior 10:25, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Do you know when the Norwegian Coast Guard was established? I think the Fritjof Nansen was a navy ship as the coast guard didn't exist, but at the same time it was the first genuine coast guard vessel. I'll just list it as an offshore patrol vessel.Inge 10:34, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
The Coast Guard as a seperate entity was created on 1 April 1977, but as we both know the function existed long before that (at least part of the time under the name "regionale sjømilitære fiskerioppsyn"). WegianWarrior 11:01, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes thats true. I have read other names as well, but they are gone from my head now.Inge 11:44, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Frithjof and Viking are 1. class gunboats according to the book Norsk forsvarshistorie 1814-1905. Inge 22:12, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
