From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Question for all who edit this page: the notable alumni section provides a lot more information than most colleges have. Shouldn't we trim it down some to whom the person is, their year of graduation, and their profession? Usually the person's own accomplishments stand for themselves...it looks cluttered to enumerate them all.

Sorry, Messenger. We're all interested in accuracy, but too many pictures? Not anyone's sole call.

Agreed, it isn't my sole call, but IMHO it looks pretty cluttered for an article this size with seven pictures and an infobox. What do you think we could or should do about it? MessengerAtLWU (talk | contribs) 23:34, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

So l;ry me get this straight, if Messenger hasn't heard of an alumni, it doesn't go in the article? How about checking an alumni directory Messenger? Class of 1993 --Thecolony

Thecolony, the point is, "How is this person notable if she doesn't even have her own page on Wikipedia?" If she's handled some sort of big court case up in New York that made lots of headlines (I've never been north of Philly, so I know nothing when it comes to New York lawyers), then by all means start an article on her, and then link her from this page. And since LU is growing, we should indeed start a notable alumni section (there are a few folks who went on into pro athletes who come to mind). But if the most notable resource I could use to find out about her is Dr. Jordan's photographic memory, there might be a problem. ;-) MessengerAtLWU (talk | contribs) 00:26, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
The problem, champ, is that it appears YOU are Furnish, and you are trying to make hardly-known Mark and unknown Kimberly known on wikipedia by editing various articles. You can't just start a list of alumni without any notability or achievements, the list could be endless. On wikipedia, you just don't write articles about yourself. It's uncool. If you're remotely notable for any reason (and believe me when I say any reason), somebody will write an article about you and add you to lists that make you feel important. Taco325i

For Messenger: Look, this page was a single four sentence paragraph when I started revamping it; I am a student and the changes I make are to broaden and expand the entry, not to deface it.

Hey, I'm a student myself. I live in Frazer, and I'm a junior majoring in physics. I laud all of the very hard work you've done with the pictures and whatnot. I too am attempting to expand the entry, and did not realize that I was in fact defacing it, so please go into more details as to how that came to be. --MessengerAtLWU 18:34, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I thought you were an administration official who was trying to reverse my changes; I didn't realize you were another student, and I was not trying to accuse you of defacing the page, just making it clear that I wasn't either. I'd much rather the page be worked on by students and not those in the administration and I'm glad other students are taking an interest :) Sorry if I seemed pissed.

It's okay, I understand. I've got a few articles I'm "protective" of myself. I'm right now adding stuff in the campus and possibly history sections. :-P

[edit] Logo

Hey y'all, would you rather we use the logo that we have on there now, or the newer Rotunda logo (see below), or perhaps something else from the University site?

Image:Longwoodlogo.jpg

Image:LU_Rotunda.gif

P.S.: I plan on uploading the new athletics logo as soon as I can find it online, probably at the LU athletics site. --MessengerAtLWU 22:44, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

It is general practice to use the university's seal first, and then unofficial logos at the bottom of the infobox (see VCU, Ohio Wesleyan University). --Omaryak 05:29, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, the second logo is just as official; the seal is used for more formal paperwork like diplomas, while I think the more stylized Rotunda logo is actually more prevalent; you can't turn around on campus without seeing it on some sort of building sign, athletic uniform, or some other official material. The link I provided above to the University site specifically provides the stylized logo, but not the seal. I say we use the top box for the Rotunda/text combo, while the bottom for the seal and maybe athletic logo. I definitely say we upload a different version the Lancer logo graphic, as the one on the wiki servers at the moment does not have the "Longwood Lancers" text. [edit] Athletics

Why is there no athletics section? Rlevse 20:14, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

I've been thinking about that myself. With no homework or classes until Tuesday, I may just have to add something. ;-) At the least, mention that LU's in the final year of its D-I reclassification and list the sports and conferences it's involved in. MessengerAtLWU (talk | contribs) 00:34, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Maybe we could trim the campus section down a bit to make room for an athletics section? It's so highly detailed and really longer than it needs to be. I think each section should be more of a snapshot, no?

All right, someone has retagged this term to redirect to the page on prostitution. This is not just to Longwood. Anyone>

[edit] Criticisms (for Messenger)

Messenger - A significant portion of the LU student body are unhappy with the school. Since you have reverted my edits instead of correcting them, how do you suggest that we cover their criticisms in a NPOV way? --71.126.136.145 16:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I myself am a student (a senior, living in Frazer). Here are the problems I saw with your edits:
  • "notoriously poor": Notorious according to whom? Poor according to what standard?
  • The Princeton Review might've said that, but remember the US News & World Report ranked LU within the top 20 public schools with master's programs. And the 2007 Princeton Review listed LU as one of the "Best Southeastern College." [1]
  • No references toward students' feelings about the "social scene"; i.e., no link to the Web site (wiki) you mentioned, and even then it's obvious that the site you talk about is very POV against the school. MessengerAtLWU (talk | contribs) 19:04, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
