The Hits/The B-Sides (1993) |
was Prince's 14th album (and second with the New Power Generation) released in 1992. The title is often referred to as Love Symbol due to the symbol having no pronunciation. Sometimes it is referred to as Prince and the New Power Generation as well. The singles "My Name Is Prince" and "Sexy M.F." were only minor hits on the US pop charts, though both made top ten in the UK. Conversely, the third single, "7", was relatively unsuccessful in the UK but was a top ten hit in the US. This album was considered Prince's last real mainstream effort as far as sales and visibility went until 2004's Musicology. The album was originally conceived as a rock-soap opera with various spoken segues throughout. However in a last-minute attempt to add an additional song, most of the segues had to be cut for album length. The few that remained were somewhat confusing in context. The album also debuts Mayte Garcia, who also plays a part in the album's storyline and would become Prince's wife in 1996. In a dispute with Warner Bros., Prince would later change his name to the infamous
symbol.
Original CD pressings of the album included the symbol printed in a gold color directly onto the plastic front CD case itself.
