Madea's Family Reunion is a film adaptation of the acclaimed stage production written by Tyler Perry and sequel to Diary of a Mad Black Woman. It was written and directed by Perry and features him playing several characters, including Mabel "Madea" Simmons. It was released on February 24, 2006. The independent film was produced by Lionsgate.

While planning her family reunion, the pistol-packing grandma, Mable "Madea" Simmons (Tyler Perry), must contend with the other dramas on her plate, including the runaway who has been placed under her care, and her love-troubled nieces, half-sisters Lisa (Rochelle Aytes) and Vanessa.
After Madea is caught without her house arrest bracelet, to avoid prison she has to take in a troubled runaway named Nikki (Keke Palmer).
Lisa is getting married to an abusive and controlling banker named Carlos (Blair Underwood). While she desperately wants to get out of the engagement, her mother, Victoria (Lynn Whitfield), has other plans. She's been living off of Lisa's trust fund and needs a new source of income once the fund dries up. Vanessa and Madea convince Lisa to stay with them after Carlos threatened to kill her if she left!
Vanessa has two kids to raise, with Madea's help, and begins dating a bus driver/painter named Frankie (Boris Kodjoe) who has a kid of his own. However, past scarring caused by Victoria and Lisa's father is making her less trustful of Frankie.
Vanessa and Victoria hate each other. Victoria hates Vanessa because her father walked out on her, and Vanessa hates Victoria for the way she controls her sister and for what she allowed Lisa's father to do to her. When Lisa and Vanessa were children, Victoria allowed her husband to rape Vanessa so he'd stay. Vanessa realizes that by hating her mother for past sins she won't be able to love Frankie fully and forgives her. Lisa goes back to Carlos after Victoria tells her he's getting counseling, which is a lie.
At the Family Reunion, held at the home of 96 year-old Aunt Ruby (Georgia Allen), Vanessa and Victoria get into a fistfight after Victoria says that anybody who loves Vanessa is a fool and Vanessa calls her a bitch. The fight is broken up when the family members are gathered to an old shack the family's ancestors grew up in. The older members of the family are appalled by how the family has turned out and convinces them to act better to each other and to themselves.
The film comes to an end on the day of Lisa's wedding. Madea tells her to stand up against Carlos and fight back. When he finds her, he asks that he and Lisa be alone. Madea asks Carlos if he'd like something to eat, and tells Lisa to give him some grits on the stove. "They hot". When Madea leaves the room, Carlos slaps Lisa in the face, but then, in retaliation, she throws the pot of hot grits in his face, scalding him badly, and then she beats him with a frying pan. Madea laughs as she hears Carlos scream, and says that she'd "recognize that scream anywhere" and that Lisa's playing "grit ball".
At the church, Lisa announces that Carlos had been beating her every day since they were engaged. Frankie then asks Vanessa to marry him, and she says yes. At the end, Victoria finally apologizes for all the hurt she caused Vanessa.

Small independent filmmaker Tyler Perry has garnered one of the highest wide-release openings to date in 2006, in both gross ($30 million) and screen average ($13,687)[1].
"The number one movie is Madea's Family Reunion, a small comedy/melodrama which grossed an astounding $30.3 million from 2,194 venues. It had a super-hot venue average of $13,787...."[2]
"Playing at 2,194 locations across North America, the film averaged a remarkable estimated $13,788 per screen, demonstrating the enormous breadth and depth of Perry's audience. The debut weekend of Madea's Family Reunion outperformed the opening weekend of Lionsgate's first Tyler Perry film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, by nearly 40 percent."[3]
The reasoning for the film's relative success[4], according to Steve Rothenberg, Lions Gate president of domestic distribution, is due to its targeted market appeal, "I believe that we're in all the right theaters...I'm not sure there's much room for expansion[5]." To illustrate the point, Lions Gate exit polls[6] showed 52% of the audience were black women over the age of 35.
