Mark Ferguson became the chief newsreader for Sydney’s 6pm edition of National Nine News in January 2005.
Ferguson was a distinguished foreign correspondent and regular presenter of Nine's national 11am and Sydney weekend bulletins, as well as on the Sunday program. He graduated to Channel Nine's top newsreading job when he became the face of the network while anchoring the network's comprehensive coverage of the Boxing Day tsunami disaster.
Ferguson is from Tamworth in north-west New South Wales where he started out at the local television station then known as NEN-9 in 1984 as a cadet journalist from McCarthy High School. His rounds covered everything from cattle prices to country music.
He moved to NRTV Lismore in 1986 before joining Channel Seven in 1987 as a reporter in the Brisbane newsroom.
In 1989 he moved to Seven's Cairns bureau where he did features for Hinch, Sportsworld and 11am.
A year travelling through Europe and Great Britain followed and in 1991 Ferguson started at Channel Seven in Sydney.
In 1992 he joined National Nine News in Sydney and transferred to Nine’s London bureau in 1994.
In London, Ferguson covered major stories including the horrific Rwanda massacres, the Palestinian intifada, the funeral of assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the 50th anniversary of D-Day, the ongoing troubles in Northern Ireland and the death of Princess Diana.
In 1997 he returned to Sydney to continue reporting and presenting the news.
Ferguson joined Good Medicine in 2000 while continuing newsreading. In 2001 he resumed full-time commitments in the newsroom, first presenting National Nine Morning News and later National Nine Early News.
In 2003 Ferguson became the presenter for the weekend 6pm Sydney editions of National Nine News as well as National Nine Early News and was the stand-in presenter for the week night 6pm bulletin.
In 2004 he joined Sunday as the program's newsreader while continuing to read the weekend editions of National Nine News and National Nine Morning News at 11am.
Mark is a national good will ambassador for the Good Beginnings charity organisation.
Mark Ferguson is married to Jayne and they have three children, Jack, 7, Ted, 4, and Paddy who is ten months old.
