Maryland Route 198
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maryland Route 198 is an east-west highway in Central Maryland that connects Fort Meade at Maryland Route 32 to Maryland Route 28 and Maryland Route 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) near Spencerville. The road passes through Laurel, Burtonsville, and Spencerville and has interchanges with the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Maryland Route 295), Interstate 95, and U.S. Highway 29.
Route 198 is also known by the names Spencerville Road (west of U.S. 29), Sandy Spring Road (between U.S. 29 and Van Dusen Road), Gorman Avenue (between Van Dusen Road and Laurel's Ninth Street, and eastbound between Ninth Street and U.S. 1), Talbott Avenue (westbound between U.S. 1 and Ninth Street), Fort Meade Road (between U.S. 1 and MD 295), and Laurel-Fort Meade Road (east of MD 295).
In 1989, a new overpass to carry Route 198 over the Baltimore-Washington Parkway just east of Laurel collapsed during rush hour, injuring 14 motorists and construction workers. The incident was blamed on faulty scaffolding used to support the uncompleted span. [1]
