Mellerud Municipality is located in the province Dalsland, in western Sweden. It is a small municipality situated by lake Vänern. Its seat is in the town Mellerud with 4,000 inhabitants, situated at .

The town Mellerud was a rural village until the railroad was lain through it in 1879 -- the so called Bergslagernas Järnväg (BJ) and Dalslands Järnväg (DJ). It received rights as a merchant town (a köping) in 1908, at which time it had some 600 inhabitants. The municipality was created in 1971 with the municipal reform.
