[edit] Biography
Meryl Davis was born on January 1, 1987, in West Bloomfield, Michigan. At the age of five, she began skating lessons with the Arctic Edge Skating Club so that she would be able to skate on Lake Walnut (a nearby lake) in the winter. Davis immediately excelled at skating. “I started out just doing some singles, then I started dance when I was eight. I got as high as Mids (Midwestern Sectionals) in novice ladies.” [1]
Despite her solo success, Davis’ coach, Seth Chafetz, believed she and Charlie White would be a perfect fit for partner skating. Says Chafetz, “It was my bright idea to put them together. Meryl was a standout at our rink, our best skater. So I put them together...” [2] The duo immediately experienced success. In 1997 (their first year as partners) they placed first at the Eastern Great Lakes Regional competition and the following year were the runners up at the Junior Olympics-Juvenile competition.
In June of 2005, Davis graduated from Wylie E. Groves High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and, upon graduation, received the Phi Beta Kappa award. She currently attends the University of Michigan and is majoring in cultural anthropology. Davis trains in Canton, Michigan, and is coached by Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva. At the United States National Figure Skating Championships, White and Davis placed third and earned a spot on the 2007 U.S. World Figure Skating Team.
