Michael Davis (magazine publisher)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Davis is a Los Angeles magazine publisher (Bold) who alleged that he had photographs that would prove Tom Cruise was homosexual.
Davis, who had placed an advertisement in his magazine offering a $500-million bounty for compromising photos of Cruise cruising for sex, claimed to have subsequently obtained a videotape of Cruise in flagrante delicto with an unnamed man. It has been suggested his sexual partner on this tape was in fact gay porn actor Kyle Bradford, who was also sued by Cruise in an unrelated case. Davis sent emails to dozens of media outlets indicating he had come into possession of the tape in question.
On June 4, 2001, before the video could be released, Cruise sued, with a $100 million defamation suit. The magazine was forced to quickly publish a retraction, and Cruise dropped his suit in exchange for a promise from Davis to never again state or imply that Cruise is anything but a heterosexual. The agreement also stipulated that "Plaintiff, Tom Cruise, does not appear on the videotape to which said defendant referred in his statement... Plaintiff is not, and never has been, homosexual and has never had a homosexual affair."
Cruise's attorney Bert Fields said of his client's sexuality: "Tom is a great believer in everybody's freedom to choose his own sexual preference." He said that not all film audiences feel the same way, "especially when Cruise has to play a heterosexual male lead."
Davis' attorney Edward Pilot said: "My client was sued for $100 million. He ended up not having to pay Cruise even a single dollar. So we're extraordinarily pleased with the outcome."
