Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission Las Vegum is an Action-adventure game for PC, PlayStation 2 and PSP, sequel of Asterix & Obelix XXL. It stars the French comic book characters, Asterix and Obelix, and in the style of the comics, that spoofs historical characters and makes a lot of cultural references, features spoofs to many classic games. The game was released in 2005, but only in Europe, since Asterix isn't well-known in the United States and Japan.

A remake has been confirmed for the Nintendo DS: Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission Wifix. Not much information has been given, but we do know that the game revolves around the same plot, with added touch screen minigames, and Wi-Fi (Hence the game's title).

[edit] Story

Julius Caesar, in another plan to conquer Gaul, builds a theme park about games called Las Vegum (pun on Las Vegas). Then Getafix swears loyalty to Caesar, and goes to Las Vegum. Asterix and Obelix come to his rescue, helped by a Roman spy called Sam Shieffer. Las Vegum is divided in 6 zones: Little Paris, WCW, LuckSore, Little Venetia, Pirate Island, and SeizeUs Palace.

[edit] Game references

  • Tomb Raider: the main Roman centurion is Larry Craft, that spoofs the name and appearance (ponytail, green clothes) of Lara Croft. Also, in some stages, posters of movies called "Larry Craft I" and "Larry Craft II" can be seen, spoofing the movie posters of Tomb Raider.
  • Splinter Cell: Sam Shieffer, the Roman spy, is based on Sam Fisher. He even has thermal goggles emitting green light.
  • Pac-Man: The Romans posses a shield that looks like Pac-Man, only with teeth. Also, a big hot air balloon in Little Paris has a large blue (scared) ghost on it, from the Pac-Man games. And at the Eiffel Tower's base, in Little Paris, there's a sign above a shop with the word "Merchandisum", and very small Pac-Man and blue ghost icons chasing each other on the border of the sign.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog series: A certain kind of Roman has a kind of blue helmet or headgear, resembling Sonic the Hedgehog's hair, and wears Sonic's trademark shoes. That Roman also carries yellow rings (present in most Sonic games). Also, in Little Paris, a spinning clothes rack can be seen, with the Sonic Roman's costume on it. The Eiffel Tower has springs that you bounce off, similar to the ones found in many Sonic games. [1].
  • Mario: In WCW, you must go down a giant green concrete Warp Pipe, to reach an underground zone highly reminiscent of the Mario games. It features POW Blocks, floor decorations of Piranha Plants, Shine Sprites, Yoshi eggs and Super Mushrooms, and there are also Mario Romans scattered around. Also, Yoshi Egg colour patterns appear on a large stone structure, which also has shoving blocks reminiscent of the shoving blocks found in Whomp's Fortress (Super Mario 64) on its back. Furthermore, the music that plays in the area sounds a bit like old Mario game music. Also, at the Eiffel Tower in Little Paris, a huge wall in the background has a painted background of Super Mario Bros. on it, complete with clouds with eyes.
    • Super Mario Sunshine: A certain Roman looks like Mario, only much more skinny. He also come with his own version of FLUDD. When attacking, he will very faintly shout "Yahoo!" in a Mario-esque voice. Upon beating him, he will shout "Mama mia!" The Roman also moves in a similar way to the way Mario moves in Super Mario Sunshine. In later stages, the Roman will even resort to trying to jump up high and butt-stomping you.
    • Yoshi: In one of the very first rooms in Little Paris, a menhir with a Yoshi Egg colour pattern can be seen.
    • Donkey Kong: A big Donkey Kong statue holding a barrel can be seen right next to the Crash head. Next to the Donkey Kong statue is a smaller statue, which looks like Pauline from the DK arcade game. In Pirate Island, some of the floor decorations have a direct copy of DK's face from the Mario vs. Donkey Kong boxart. Also, in WCW and Pirate Island, you must go up a 2-dimensional construction site, complete with barrels bouncing down.
  • Rayman: Another Roman is made up of a floating body, with floating hands, feet, and a head. He can throw his fists forwards.
  • Mortal Kombat: In Little Venetia, the small rooms in between big rooms have wall paintings of the Mortal Kombat dragon logo, only with a seahorse. Also on the same walls are paintings resembling a full and a half-empty life bar, with the word "Fatalitum" underneath it. Also, on the sides of the room, 2 statues can be seen. One has his fist stretched out, and a rope with coloured flags is moving towards the statue across from it; a reference to Scorpion.
  • Crash Bandicoot: In Little Venetia, a gigantic Crash head can be found on one of the rooftops.
  • Tetris: In some of the levels, to proceed to another room, the player is required to break open a doorway, blocked with Tetris blocks.
  • Bomberman: A bomb with Bomberman's face must be thrown at the Tetris wall. Also, in Little Paris, a spinning clothes rack can be seen, with Bomberman's costume on it.
  • Tekken/Street Fighter: Another type of Roman is dressed like Ryu but with Jin Kazama's gloves. He attacks by shooting white energy blasts.
  • The Legend of Zelda: In the room where you battle Julius Caesar in SeizeUs Palace, two statues in the distance resemble Link riding Epona, and Princess Zelda. The Zelda statue is posed just like the Statue of Liberty.
  • Pikmin: In Little Paris and LuckSore, big yellow statues of Pikmin can be seen. Also, at LuckSore's entrance is a giant Captain Olimar head, on a Sphinx.
  • Bubble Bobble: The house to the left of the Notre Dame in Little Paris has a small sign on it with Bub or Bob (It's in a brownish colour) wearing a Roman helmet.
  • Lemmings: In the background of Little Paris, you can see upright conveyor belts with pictures of walking Lemmings and falling Lemmings with umbrellas.
  • Space Invaders: In one of the rooms in LuckSore, wall decorations of the Space Invaders ship and aliens can be seen.
  • Star Fox: In Little Paris, the game's main hub, one of the shops near the Arc de Triomphe has a giant Slippy Toad head on its roof. Also, the sign above the house's door reads "Slippis".
  • Quake III: In the arenas in WCW, you can see a poster of "Cake: Ice Crimus", with a logo similar to that of Quake III.
  • Soul Calibur II: In the same arena, a spoof of the Soul Calibur II boxart can be seen.
  • Tekken 3: Once again in WCW, a poster spoofing Tekken 3 can be seen, called "Fightum Arena".
  • Tekken 4: The next Tekken game is spoofed as well, once again in WCW.
  • Unreal Tournament. Finally, in WCW, a poster spoofing Unreal Tournament can be seen. The "U" is replaced by an "A", and it's called Arena Tournament.

[edit] Other references

  • MGM. The area "WCW"'s logo is simply the MGM studios logo flipped upside down (The "C" is an upside-down "G").
  • Luxor. The area "LuckSore" is a play on Luxor Hotel, the casino. Inside, many slot machines can be found.
  • The Matrix. In the penultimate final battle, with Julius Caesar, Julius will utter the line "We meet at last, mister Anderson". Then Asterix says "It ends tonight, Caesar" referring to Neo saying "It ends tonight".
  • NBC. The central room of SeizeUs Palace has a big logo resembling the NBC logo on the wall.
  • Les Ambassadeurs. In various places around Little Venetia and Little Lutetia, you can see the "Les Ambassadeurs" painting by Aristide Bruant, only with Larry Craft's face and name.
