I am a very casual wikipedia user. I usually only make minor edits to articles that I happen to be reading. I use wikipedia to learn about music and science stuff, and a little history. My background is in music technology and arts education. I've found wikipedia is a great educational resource. I routinely use wikipedia to create on-the spot lecture outlines when my students request information on a topic I don't fully understand. When i was a boy I spent a lot of time reading my parent's encyclopedia. I was often disappointed at how brief the articles were, and how they didn't really offer good tangential cross-references. Wikipedia is great !
I'm pretty sure "a free repository of the world's knowledge that everyone can use" is high on the list of 'signs that you have arrived in the hi-tech future' along with moving sidewalks, talking computers, personal jetpacks, the pocket jukebox, doors that open automatically, and tiny wireless communicators which are also computers.
