Muhlenberg South High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Muhlenberg South High School is one of two high schools in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. The school was formed in 1990 as a result of the consolidation of five smaller schools. The school currently has a student enrollment of about 700. The mascot of the school is the "Suns" with red, gold, and orange as the school colors. The mission is "to educate and prepare our students to successfully function in a complex and changing word."
[edit] Sports
The South Suns have been working hard to build on the short 17-year tradition of the school. The Lady Suns Cross Country team is the 2006 Class 2A State Champions, with senior Suzanne Holt winning the individual state title. This was Muhlenberg County's first state championship in a KHSAA-sanctioned sport.
The Lady Suns Soccer team was the 2006 District Champions, the first time since 2003.
The South Suns basketball team is looking for another great basketball season this year. Last year's team had the most wins since the 1996-1997 season, with a 16-13. That includes an 11 game winning streak, the longest in South's history.
The South Suns Football team consistently dominates the school's main rival, the Muhlenberg North Stars.
[edit] Extracurricular Activities
Muhlenberg South also has strong extracurricular activities. The Muhlenberg South Marching Suns Band made their first-ever appearance at the State Finals in 2006. The Marching Suns were 2nd in Class 2A at Preliminaries at WKU, and finished fourth in the state in finals.
The National Honor Society has had three past State Presidents, and currently has the State Vice President.
The school's chapter of the FFA consistently represents South well. A South student is currently the Regional Secretary.
Students recently began the school newspaper (after many years of absence). In two years, the newspaper has already won several state and regional awards.
