Template talk:Newvoter

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As I argued when this was first discussed, to remove the coloured box has two negative effects: first, it risks looking as though the message is just from some individual editor, rather than expressing Wikipedia policy; secondly, it risks being missed, as it just blends in with other text on the page (especially on over-populated Talk pages for IP addresses).

Being informal and chatty is fine, but there are times when something more formal is preferable. I think that this is of one of those times. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:28, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I disagree for a couple of reasons. First, I find that newer users tend to react better to "personal-seeming" messages than to canned text. It gives them someone approachable to go talk to about the message if they don't understand it, rather than feeling like this is handed down from above. Second, this is not policy, it's just how some people tend to react to newbies participating in polls, not that I necessarily disagree with that reaction. It is from "some individual editor" and should be indicated as such. And this message is way less important (in terms of the harm to the encyclopedia) than the anti-vandalism test messages, which I'm presuming is what you're talking about when you mention the cluttered talk pages. Anyway, if I have something really important to say to an anon, I clear the talk page first, or give it a clear heading, or do whatever else I feel I need to do. moink 13:59, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I can't say that I've found that, to be honest; we may have had different experiences, or have interpreted our experiences differently. In any case, I always sign template messages, so they've still got someone to talk to. With regard to clearing a Talk page, is the appearance of this topic at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Warnings on crowded anon talk-pages a coincidence? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:30, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Well, that is where I found the link to here, but I'm always interested in templates intended for user talk pages, particularly the talk pages of new users. So, err, we "interpret or experiences differently" (I adore your diplomacy, and I'm really not being sarcastic, I value diplomacy highly in this project) but where do we go from here? moink 16:14, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

In theory we could invite comments, though I'm not keen (you hang around waiting, and no-one shows up — and then sudenly a host of people with peculiar ideas start editing the template in peculiar ways, and it's worse than before.

Would using 'blockquote' be a compromise (or a transparent box, if that's possible; it probably isn't)? I've tried the blockquote approach (as well as moving a sentence to make the text run more smoothly); what do you think? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:39, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I think I like the blockquote approach, except that when I sign it, it seems to put my sig in a funny place. Maybe you can suggest how to fix that? As per your text edit, I think it's great. moink 16:49, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Ah, I hadn't thought of that. I'll play around and see if I can solve it. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:57, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

On another note, I hate the phrase I introduced "one-member one-vote voting" cuz it sounds stupid, but I wanted to be very specific and make it clear that admins often make decisions based on more than simple numerical principles, and that Wikipedia is not a democracy moink 18:25, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wow - I go away for a couple of days, and everything changes. :) I like the text changes - I think that it makes things clearer. I also prefer the box, but I'm not married to it, and the naked text is almost as good. – ClockworkSoul 14:06, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

10qwerty (talk contribs) has just changed the style to plain text (no indenting); I've reverted that, and hope that he'll discuss it here. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:15, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

You caught me editing the template without carefully reading this talk page. Sorry. 10qwerty 17:29, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

This template causes a bit of trouble as the 'D' in 'deletion' is uppercase, and not lowercase as the sign would appear on the actual article. When this template is put on a user talk page, its red. In order to fix this, you have to change the d, which is, at times, inconvenient. Could anyone fix this?

Journalist C./ Holla @ me!

[edit] Change of name

Now that Votes for deletion has become Articles for deletion, the template needs to be changed. I have no idea how to do that; could someone explain? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 14:20, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
