[edit] Bryan Nikolai
Bryan Nikolai was born December 6, 1978 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin to mother Marian (Heim) and father Mark Nikolai. He attended St.Peter's Catholic grammar school until the age of twelve, when he transferred into the public school system at P.J. Jacobs Junior High. In 1997, he graduated from Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH). During his high school years, Bryan excelled in the sciences, taking every science-based class offered at SPASH and holding the position of Science Club President. He also competed in the Science Olympiad annually held at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin. Bryan was also an outstanding English student. One of his more infamous short stories is still discussed in English classes to this day.
After graduation, Bryan matriculated at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. He spent two short years at this university before transferring to the University of Minnesota. Bryan received his Bachelor of Science degree in 2002 with double majors in Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development (GCD) and Biochemistry. In 2006, he was awarded a Master of Biological Science (MBS) degree for his studies of Lifeguard, a seven-transmembrane protein that protects cells from Fas-mediated apoptosis. His data suggest a unique method for treatment of glioblastoma, a devastating form of brain cancer, using lentiviral shRNA vectors and the proapoptotic drug doxorubicin.
Bryan currently lives in a small community south of Houston, Texas with his beautiful wife, De Ann. He is currently working towards his PhD at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology.
