From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oxford is a small town (Population: 1,332 as of 2001[1]) located in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada, about 32 kilometers (or 20 miles) away from Amherst. Oxford is the Canadian wild blueberry capital and houses several blueberry attractions, such as The Wild Blueberry and Maple Center, a blueberry museum. The town is surrounded by lowbush blueberry fields and is near the Collingwood, Nova Scotia, residence of John Bragg, a major player in the blueberry business, owner of Eastlink (a major Atlantic Canadian cable and internet provider) and one of the richest men in Canada.
[edit] History
Oxford was founded in 1791 by settler Richard Thompson. The name "Oxford" is derived from the shallow river that was used to enter Oxford. Early settlers often found it easy to use Oxen to cross, or "ford", the river, and thus the town's name was born.
