Panjabi Hit Squad
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Panjabi Hit Squad are regarded by many as the originators of the modern "Urban Asian Fusion" sound (traditional Bhangra music fused with western beats). The Squad have been pushing the boundaries of UK Urban Asian Fusion for almost a decade. Formed in July 2001 by two of the biggest names in the genre: Markie Mark and Asian DJ Culture, both at the forefront of the UK Desi Beats scene since the early 90's.
The Squad currently have a weekly radio show on BBC 1Xtra and were the first Asian artists signed to the UK imprint of Hip-Hop giant, Def Jam.
The Squad have released three albums to date. The Album, The Streets and Desi Beats Vol 1, a mainstream project that also featured established western acts such as LL Cool J and reggae act Sean Paul as well as established and upcoming names from the Desi Beats scene.
The Squad are also credited for discovering Ms Scandalous, the first established Asian female MC in the Desi Beats music scene, and Alyssia, regarded as one of the hottest bollyhood singers on the scene.
