[edit] Childhood and Early Career
Patrick McMullan was born in Brooklyn NY August 31, 1955. His family soon moved to Selden Long Island (NY) where his father's Family had Summer homes. At 12 He moved with his father and 2 sisters to Huntington Long Island. He graduated from Walt Whitman High School in the Class of 1973, and then majored in Business at New York University During his schooling, he attended Studio 54 & the Mud Club in downtown New York where he would encounter nightlife figures. Around 1978 Patrick McMullan worked for photographer Terry Stephenson, who took pictures of figures such as Edie Sedgwick, and also photographed still life images. Stephenson taught McMullan most darkroom work.
McMullan started his own photography business by taking jobs no one else was interested in, such as shooting ceiling leaks and basement floods. His first published photographs were theatrical photography for the Rediculous Theater Company.
Not feeling well in 1981, McMullan found himself with Embryonal Cell Carcinoma in advanced stage, a highly malignant form of Testicular Cancer.
