Time for some discussion about Prince Albert.
Considering the history of the last 100 years, what is in store for this City and inhabitants over the next 100?
There is some questionable stuff on this page (particularly the mentions of small non-notable bands from PA who only played one gig "to a small audience"), but some of the silly-sounding stuff has a folksy quality to it that adds colour to the page (I particularly like the bit about the local high school that performs gothic romances and light-hearted kids shows).
We have to remember that if we are to delete much of the information that we have deemed "questionable" then P.A. starts to look like the typical dull prairie city. Until we are able to add more cultural statements on the city, these will have to do. As long as it is to do with Prince Albert, in my mind it has legitimacy.

I resided in Prince Albert for some time and do not accept the authors contention that these expressions are unique to Prince Albert, particularly "cuz" which I believe is a common informal expression used by Metis people. Some of the other expressions I have never encountered before and I think evidence should be provided for their uniqueness and pervasiveness in the city or this section should be removed immediately. Prince Albert is not the northernmost city in Saskatchewan. At latitude 53°17' north Lloydminster is. Realistically millions more Canadians have travelled through Lloyd. given the Yellowhead and relatively closeness to Edmonton, not to mention proximity to the soon-to-be twinned Highway 63 in Alberta that heads up to Fort Mac with junctions into SK. La Loche will be a 4.5 hour car ride to Edmonton, which is significant given that the road on the Saskatchewan side is gravel.
[edit] Problems with the city
In order to be unbiassed and tell the whole story, it may be worth noting somewhere on the page that many Saskatchewan residents, including people from Prince Albert, consider it an undesireable place to live. Racial tensions, segregration, high crime rates, etc. could be discussed along with the demise of local businesses since the introduction of big box retailers in the town. The obesity epidemic may also be worth noting.
- As a resident of Prince Albert, I do not see it as an undesirable place to live. The problems mentioned earlier are evident in many cities across Canada, and shouldn't be relegated specifically to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Yes, local business are suffering due to big box retailers, but the same thing is happening everywhere.
If anything, it should be specially noted that the Indigenous Peoples residing in and around Prince Albert are making headway in regards to self-government and their justice systems. Racism is not as evident in this city as in others, as many native and non-native people have learned to live with each other in harmony. Prince Albert is the only place where I've seen native people employed in a variety of jobs and working with the public. It is something you don't find anywhere else, and should be applauded.

I agree with the first entry here under problems. Racism is an epidemic which has swept the city back into the days of the wild west. However, on the other hand, many say "You cannot spell paradise without P.A.".
This is true you can't spell paradise without PA. lol.. Anyway, I dug up some info from stats canada on various social issues in the city. I'd like to add citations, but I don't know how. I'm sure its quite simple. Anyone able to fill me in on this? Oh..and does anyone else find it funny that if you search "prince albert wikipedia", the first thing that comes up is a male genital piercing? Perhaps we should have a link off of this page so that there's no confusion. Haha.

[edit] Problems with page
Personally I have a question to ask local P.A. residents. I have a problem with the fact that people operating this site adjust this page to how they want it, when it causes even errors with the city. For example someone claiming the city was situated north of the North Saskatchewan River. This page should only be changed by those who have a knowledge of the city, not moderators.
Well, I don't live in the town, but someone who (apparently) did scrawled junk on the page a while ago and I cleaned it. Your solution would mean (1) this individual could still put misinformation on, and (2) I (or someone like me) could not remove it. There is a responsibility to provide good information, however that responsibility is not accepted by all visitors, and geographical location doesn't influence that. I do take your point that people should be knowledgeable to write here, but it's hard to enforce. WhiteHatLurker 23:30, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

- The purpose of the article is not to "benefit the city", but rather it's to provide a neutral article that describes Prince Albert in a factual context.

- Per Wikipedia rules, any information posted here has to be verifiable. I'm not suggesting that either of your edits haven't been, but we just need to keep in mind that, for example, you couldn't post something that involved personal knowledge that hasn't been published in a source that other Wikipedians can check. As an example, somebody recently filled Brockville, Ontario with an extensive discussion, almost longer than the entire rest of the article combined, of organized crime in the city, right down to naming the names and hangouts of local hoods. That would be an example of something that doesn't belong here, since nobody can verify it through anything other than personal interaction, and something that an administrator would be justified in removing even if they knew nothing about the city. - I see where you are coming from. But geographical items can be verified if you look hard enough. Sure there will be some people who will make the page look bad if they don't agree with something. But for the most part, I put on the page stuff I know seeing as I am a Prince Albert resident.

St. Paul's was the first church in the Prince Albert settlement about 100 years or so ago. They just celebrated it's birthday a week or two ago. Mr. C.C. 17:11, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Celebrity List
I recognize that a "celebrity list" is problematic - celebrities change both in respect to the list itself, as well as our perception of the people on it. There is also invariably disagreement as to what constitutes a celebrity. (For instance, many of us have a bit of a problem with Don Cherry's position on the list of the 100 Most Important Canadians in History done by the CBC sometime last year - others will disagree, obviously.)
However, if you are going to begin listing NHL players as celebrities, I'm sure there are others that could be mentioned. When I was young, I remember going to a celebration of the one of the cities "big birthdays" (I thought it was it 75th, but doesn't make sense if the city was established in 1885 as your article suggests, since I doubt I attended many celebrations 4 years before my birth). I was very excited because Jim Nielson and another player from the NY Rangers were there signing autographs. (I think the other players name was something like Dave Balon, but I can't recall.) I think they were both from Prince Albert, though I'm not sure whether they were born and raised there. Jim certainly lived in P.A. for a long time because I knew him and his daughters quite well. David Tippet (Tipett/Tippett?) is also from Prince Albert (he was a player and now coaches the Dallas Stars).
Another celebrity that comes to mind is the writer Max Braithwaite. He was born in Nikomis, but grew up in Prince Albert. I believe in one of his books he has a story about tobagganing down 6th Avenue west and having to bail out because the train is coming.
Braithwaite was born in a town called Nokomis, and in his story, "Never Sleep Three in a Bed", he has an anecdote about riding a tobaggan down the hill in P.A., but the street is 2nd Avenue West. Good Ninja
[edit] Prince Albert's (the person) Picture
Is it really necessary to have a picture of the man, Prince Albert, at the head of the page? Most residents have no idea who he was or what he did. I would suggest a picture here of the the city's skyline and have the picture of Prince "What's his name?/Who cares" down below. Good Ninja

- I agree. It does make the article more interesting. The point of an encyclopedia, after all, is not to reflect to people what is already familiar to them, but to show them soemething they can't get elsewhere. I think it raises the profile of the whole article. In fact, my first reaction was: Great! Where did they get that picture? Apart from that, the PA skyline does not make it stand out from other small-city skylines, so I'm glad you chose not to highlight it. --Paul EJ King 00:55, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
