Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 de Maio de 1859, em Edimburgo, Escócia - 7 de Julho de 1930, em Windlesham, Sussex, Inglaterra), mais conhecido como Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, foi um escritor britânico, mundialmente famoso por suas 60 histórias sobre o detetive Sherlock Holmes, que foram consideradas uma grande inovação no campo da literatura criminal. Foi um escritor prolífico cujos trabalhos incluem histórias de ficção científica, novelas históricas, peças e romances, poesia e obras de não-ficção. Arthur Conan Doyle viveu e escreveu parte de suas obras em Southsea, um bairro elegante de Portsmouth.

[editar] Arauto do Espiritismo

Conan Doyle, no ano de 1887 trava seu primeiro contato com o Espiritismo, iniciando neste mesmo ano, junto ao seu amigo Ball, arquiteto de Portsmouth, sessões mediúnicas que o fizeram rever seus conceitos. Sua obra literária, então, ganha notoriedade, atingindo milhares de leitores. No auge da fama, em 1918, enfrenta todos os céticos e publica A Nova Revelação, obra em que manifesta sua convicção na explicação espírita para as manifestações paranormais estudadas a esmo durante o século XIX, e inicia uma série de outras, em meio a palestras sobre o tema.

Sua convicção foi além: para receber o título de Par do Reino Inglês, foi-lhe imposta a condição de renunciar às suas crenças. Confrontando a todos, e ao sectarismo vigente, permaneceu fiel à fé que abraçara, e que acompanhou até seus últimos dias. Foi Presidente Honorário da Federação Espírita Internacional, Presidente da Aliança Espírita de Londres e Presidente do Colégio Britânico de Ciência Espírita.

Dentre suas obras, destacam-se os dois volumes de "A História do Espiritismo", pormenorizado estudo sobre a história dos movimentos espiritualista anglo-saxônico e espírita francês.

[editar] Crente em fadas

Em seus últimos anos, Doyle chegou a ponto de escrever um livro protagonizado pelo professor Challenger sobre o assunto, The Land of Mist. Um dos aspectos mais estranhos desse período de sua vida foi o livro de 1921, The Coming of the Fairies ("A Chegada das Fadas"). Ele estava, aparentemente, totalmente convencido da veracidade das fotografias das fadas de Cottingley^[1], que foram reproduzidas no livro, juntamente com outras teorias da natureza e existência de fadas e espíritos. Curiosamente, ao dizer tal coisa, Doyle foi de encontro ao Espiritismo, que trata como falsa a existência de fadas e gnomos.
