Richard Mitchell (academic)

Richard Mitchell (April 26, 1929 - December 27, 2002) was an American academic.
He privately published the journal The Underground Grammarian from from 1977-1992. Although its circulation was limited, The Underground Grammarian was highly regarded, and, in addition to its academic audience, had a following outside academia that included George Will and Johnny Carson.
His writings were also collected as the books Less Than Words Can Say, The Graves of Academe, The Leaning Tower of Babel and The Gift of Fire. The text of all four books, the The Underground Grammarian journal issues and several booklets and essays are available for free on the internet.
