Functionalism is the view that everything in life has a certain function. For example, one might say it is the function of a key to open a lock, or that it is the function of a door to allow entry into particular spaces. However, it is not quite this clear-cut. For example, a fake door painted onto a wall may be perceived as having the function of a normal work-a-day door, whereas in fact its function is only to appear as if this is its function, in order to create humourous situations or otherwise mislead those who with to use the door in line with its accepted function. Hence, the fake door's real function then is to appear as if it has its usual function, whereas in fact it does not.
