Sara Maitland (born 1950) is a British writer and academic. An accomplished novelist, she is perhaps best regarded for her extraordinary short stories. More often than not, her work has a magic realist tendency. Maitland is regarded as one of those at the vanguard of the 1970s feminist movement, and is often described as a feminist writer. Currently a Roman Catholic, religion is another preoccupation in much of her work.
Her most recent collection of short stories, On Becoming a Fairy Godmother, is a fictional exploration celebrating the menopausal woman.
