I took out references to Canada. The content doesn't all apply to all Canadian provinces, in my view. For instance, in Alberta, a school operated by a Separate Catholic school district, would not be called a "public school" (even though the district and school share many attributes of a "public" school). Ultimately, it would be good to mention Canada, but only if its done more clearly. I don't see the point of specifically mentioning Canada, unless the article discusses Canada specifically. Other countries with school districts aren't mentioned by name, and there's no special reason to mention Canada. --rob 04:31, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Then this article should be moved to School Districts in the United States, otherwise it doesn't reflect wikipedia's global outlook. -- TheMightyQuill 15:02, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I've been told that in some places, school districts were set up separately from local governemnts in order to somehow circumvent integration laws, busing, etc. I don't see how such a loophole would be possible, but has anyone else heard this? While it is hearsay, I have heard it more than once (about different places), but no one was able to offer specific info. [edit] School District Numbering/Classification

In some states, school districts are numbered. For instance, "Greenwood Local Schools No. 259". Why is that? What does this mean? Some school districts are also "Consolidated", "Unified" or "Exempted Village" school districts. It seems like we should have, perhaps, a section for each state that discusses the state terminology. In some states, school districts are also county-based (Florida, Georgia, Maryland etc.), while others are based on townships/cities or are entirely autonomous of any governmental unit. There seems to be so much difference from one state or province to the next and it's all very confusing. But very interesting, too.
