Second Army (Turkey)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Turkish Second Army was a Turkish field army of World War I.
The Second Army was activated upon Turkey's entry into the war in October 1914 under the command of General Vehip Pasha. It was allocated to the Middle East, where Turkey faced a war against Britain and its Commonwealth troops, mostly ANZAC troops. There was not much action in the Middle East during the time period, as Britain was concentrating its forces against Turkey elsewhere, mostly in Gallipoli.
In 1916, the distinguished general and future president of post-war Turkey, General Mustafa Kemal Pasha, became commander of the Second Army as part of a wider German-led force. At the time the Second Army was stationed in Aleppo in Syria, which was near the rear of the front line, which by then was mostly in Mesopotamia and Palestine. In October 1917 Kemal resigned in protest of Enver Pasha's conduct of the Caucasus campaign. Turkey's war against Russia in the Caucasus had turned out disastrously ever since Enver's abortive offensive on Baku. Upon Kemal's departure, the Second Army was disbanded.
[edit] Modern Army
The Modern Turkish Second Army has its headquarters in Malatya. It protects Anatolia and it patrols the border with Syria, Iraq and Iran.
