Sigizmund Abramovich Katz, (Russian: Сигизмунд Абрамович Кац; April 4, 1908–June 17, 1984), was one of the foremost Soviet composers who specialized in writing popular and mass songs. One of the founding fathers of that unique genre of the Soviet mass song (virtually unknown outside of the Soviet Union and Russia), Sigizmund Katz became famous in the 1940s and 1950s. His songs ranged from lyrical serenadas and somewhat bucolic ballads to galvanizing marches and quasi-Straussian waltzes. Sigizmund Katz' professional reputation now rests primarily on his powerful war-time song "And the Briansk Forrest Rustled Sternly" (lyrics by Anatoly Sofronov) dedicated to the struggles of Soviet partisans against Nazi invaders. Needless to say, the composer's legacy greatly surpasses this one song.
