A Spectrum auction is a process whereby governments use an auction system to sell the rights to broadcast over specific electromagnetic wavelengths.

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) conducts auctions of licenses for electromagnetic spectrum. The FCC has been conducting competitive auctions since 1994 rather than assigning spectrum through policies of best public use. FCC spectrum auctions are open to any company or individual that is determined by the Commission to be a qualified bidder.
