Steven Laurence Frew (born April 4,1984 in Chichester, England) is a composer.
Steven Laurence Frew was born in Chichester, and has lived in Sussex for the majority of his childhood. He soon became interested in music at a young age, and began to teach himself the piano at the age of eight. Around his studies at the piano he discovered his interest in composition, and had several of his smaller works performed by his school wind band and choir. In his final high school year Steven won the Rita Goodman cup for Musical Excellence after performing his first work for piano.
It was at the age of sixteen Steven’s interest for composition developed, and under the teaching of Terence Albright he began to explore the possibilities of more advanced Twentieth Century compositional techniques. Pieces composed during this time included As Predictable as British Weather and Caricatures for solo piano, a trio for two flutes and piano (dedicated to Oliver Vincent) and A blinded bird for baritone and piano.
In 2002 Steven auditioned and was awarded at place to study composition at the Royal College of Music in London. During the same year he was commissioned to write a chamber work called On The Wing. Whilst composing this piece he was introduced to the composer Anthony Payne for consultation and for advice to express his individual approach to lyricism.
Steven recently met the Indian composer Param Vir who mentored him during the composition of his late chamber work Awakening.
Currently Steven is attending his third year of study at the Royal College of Music and studies with the head of composition, William Mival. His studies have lead to the completion of various vocal works and his Piano Trio which was premiered by the Sans Souci trio.
Steven has recently completed a setting of M.S. Pachos’s I did not die for small ensemble and soprano. He is also working on Prelude and Fantasy for solo piano. He has taken on board a Sinfonietta style composition for sixteen players based on the archetypal images of the fallen angel.
