TV.com summary |
The Emperor's New School is an American animated television series on the Disney Channel. It is follow-up series to the Disney movie The Emperor's New Groove. It features all four members of the core cast (Yzma, Kronk, Pacha, and Kuzco) from the movie. In the TV series, Kuzco (the emperor on which the show and movie are based) has to pass all his classes in the kingdom's school before he is able to rule again.
This show does not include all of the voice actors from the original movies. Eartha Kitt (Yzma), Patrick Warburton (Kronk), and Wendie Malick (Chicha) return, making them the only three actors to be part of all three associated projects. J.P. Manoux reprises his role as the voice of Emperor Kuzco as he did on the Disney Channel series "House of Mouse", replacing David Spade, who voiced the ruler in both movies. The Buzz on Maggie star Jessica Di Cicco voices the new character Malina. Fred Tatasciore voices Pacha instead of John Goodman.
In Australia, it recently began airing as part of the Seven Network's Saturday Disney program. Seven has a long-term program supply agreement with Disney/Buena Vista.
The second season of the show is set to premiere in March 2007.

[edit] Setting
The show comes after The Emperor's New Groove (and possibly before Kronk's New Groove). This is indicated by knowledge of the events of the movie, which are brought up in multiple episodes.
The show's position in relation to Kronk's New Groove is less clear. It is possible that the series and Kronk's New Groove are two separate continuities. In the series, Kronk is still working for Yzma and is single, but in Kronk's New Groove he retires as Yzma's lackey and gets married during the closing credits. In the beginning of Kronk's New Groove, Yzma is pictured with a cat's tail, claiming it was a side effect from her kitten transformation at the end of The Emperor's New Groove. She does not, however, have a tail in the series.

[edit] Major Characters
[edit] Kuzco
Kuzco is an "emperor-to-be" that must pass all of his classes at the Kuzco Academy to become ruler. Kuzco bought and funds the school. He is extremely self-centered and has a crush on Malina, whom he often refers to as a "hottie hot hottie" and sometimes says "no touchie". He is often naive and oblivious to many things. He has problems paying attention when someone is talking to him. He is generally ignorant of the facts but could be considered clever in other respects.
[edit] Yzma
Formerly the Emperor's advisor who wants to take over the palace and become Empress. She constantly tries to cause Kuzco to fail and has disguised herself as Principal Amzy (Yzma backwards) in order to achieve that end. A running gag with this identity comes from Kronk's inability to remember that she and Principal Amzy are one and the same.
[edit] Kronk
Yzma's assistant and Kuzco's friend. He is supposedly much dumber than Kuzco, but spontaneously shows intellect. He often forgets things (such as consistently pulling the wrong lever to the "not so secret" lab) and gets carried away, resulting in him leaving the subject rediscussed. In The Emperor's New Groove, Kronk's age is late-twenties, yet is disguised as a student despite this.
[edit] Malina
A popular, stereotypical, headstrong, 'A+' average cheerleader, who is one of Kuzco's best friends. Kuzco has a crush on her, which he shows openly. (He has called her a "hottie hot hottie" many times.) Several times she has shown she might like Kuzco, but this is still unknown. She helps him out frequently. Malina sometimes becomes blinded by success and turns selfish and greedy.
[edit] Pacha
Pacha is one of Kuzco's best friends and always supports Kuzco on his road to becoming Emperor. He serves as a father figure to Kuzco. He and his family took Kuzco in when he had nowhere else to go.
[edit] Mr. Flaco Moleguaco
Kuzco's short tempered (and short in height) teacher. He often finds Kuzco annoying and also tries to play on his weaknesses. He also threatens to fail Kuzco quite often. However, it was revealed in Kuzcogarten that Mr. Moleguaco found his class boring without Kuzco and gladly welcomed him back when Kuzco returned to class.
[edit] Bucky
The squirrel that makes various appearances in the show. He dislikes Yzma and is good friends with Kronk. He was also Kuzco's tutor in the episode Squeakend at Bucky's.
[edit] Chicha
Pacha's loving wife. She's like a mother to Kuzco.
[edit] Chaca, Tipo, and Yupi
Pacha and Chicha's children. Chaca is the oldest, Tipo is in the middle, and Yupi is the youngest. Jessie Flower voiced Chaca. Shane Baumel voiced Tipo. Tara Strong voiced Yupi in The Yzma that Stole Kuzcoween.
[edit] The Royal Record Keeper
Keeps track of Kuzco's record in school and also reminds Kuzco of the limitations to his power that are in place until he graduates.

[edit] Running gags
Most of the running gags in The Emperor's New School originated in the first movie, The Emperor's New Groove. These include:
- A gag involving Kronk and Yzma trying to get to the secret lab returns from the movie. When Yzma yells "Pull the lever Kronk!", something happens to Yzma such as a large pot falling and trapping her before Kronk pulls the correct lever.
- A gag involving a bug walking into shot and a chimpanzee eating it. (Or something similar.) A character will usually comment "What's with the Bug and the Monkey?".
- The presence of anachronisms, such as calculators, backpacks, and an ATM.
- A character will be tossed out of a high window, only to land in something soft that has just been delivered.
