[edit] Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 35% for major edits and 1% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 05:30, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories you created

If you want the categories you created listed on your talk page to link to the categories without having your talk page inadvertently included in the category, you can do that by adding a colon before category like this: [[:Category:People from Guam]] so it comes out like this: Category:People from Guam. My apologies if I'm pointing out something you already knew and chose not to do. Шизомби 23:02, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Missouri

Dear TommyBoy, I am beginning the process to create a wikiproject for Missouri. in order to do so i'm required to show that there is a base of at least 5-10 people who would be interested in contributing to such a project. the project would serve to aid in the creation and editing of articles related to the U.S. State Missouri, its cities, counties, geography, transportation, culture, history, education, and so on. It aims to expand Wikipedia's resources on Missouri in a fair and accurate manner. Since you're stated as being a wikipedian in missouri, i wanted to see if you were interested. if you are, please add your username at Wikipedia:Wikiproject/List_of_proposed_projects#Missouri and User:Preschooler.at.heart/Missouri. thanks for your consideration. --preschooler.at.heart my talk - contribs 15:55, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank You for your support. WikiProject Missouri is now online. please feel free to contribute, and add your name to the list of members. --preschooler@heart my talk - contribs 23:29, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Date linking

You recently de-wikified a date, with the edit summary: son's birthdate does not need to be wikify. But it does - for Wikipedia's date preference display system, all dates which include day month or day month year need to be wikified so that they display in the user's chosen format. See the Date and time section of My preferences if you want to change your own. Rmhermen 21:12, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Najeeb Halaby Photo

I don't know all the legal details, and of the pre-existing copyright tags none seemed to fit well.

Here is the response that I got from AUB:

> Can the photo of Najeeb Halaby
> (http://wwwlb.aub.edu.lb/~webbultn/v4n7/images/halaby.jpg)
> be used for the Wikipedia article?

We would be happy to give permission to use the photo of Najeeb Halaby in
your article, providing you can mention AUB as being the source as follows:

Source: American University of Beirut

(Or)

Photo credit: American University of Beirut

Hopefully this will somewhat clarify the things; but I still don't know which tag I should use. --tyomitch 19:32, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] USCOTW

I saw that you've worked on the Bill Ritter (politician) article, and would like to encourage you to support it in the USCOTW elections. Thank you, Editor19841 22:47, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Coast Guard revert

Hi there. I saw you reverted my edit on the Commandant of the Coast Guard page, but I think it's a useful edit as it helps explain the term. Come over to the Commandant page and let's discuss. --Awiseman 19:06, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Steven W. Taylor

Sorry, all I meant by that was that I moved it to the right and framed it; I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to tagging pictures. CanadianCaesar Cæsar is turn’d to hear 04:16, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1994 Anchorage election

I don't have the exact figures, no, since that would require going to the municipal clerk (the municipality only has results back to 2002 on their website, and the state Division of Elections doesn't keep municipal results at all). I'm curious about it myself, though, so I'll probably be going to the library tomorrow to see if I can find anything. The dates on his Assembly service seem a bit off to me as well, and I'd like to know if there's anything to back up my suspicions. —Zero Gravitas 02:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kathy Augustine article

I assume referring to the 10-6-2003 press release? Following the original inline link to the press release page, it was not immediately apparent the connection between the link and the referring sentence. However, press releases from her office during her term are legitimate "further reading"/external links for a reader to be directed to for more information about her political career.

As far as referencing the pdf file, you can use the following citation format:

P.S. I was unaware of Kathy Augustine until I saw the article listed on Requests for expansions. — ERcheck (talk) 18:45, 16 July 2006 (UTC)::

In keeping with the <ref> and <references/> in the article currently, I am going convert the inline pdf reference to the same format. — ERcheck (talk) 19:24, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!

John Y. Brown was apparently acutally a neighbor of mine in Nashville when he was involved in buying Col. Sanders out of KFC, so I have an interest in his career. Still, some things (like the statement that I just made) are true but unsourced and their truth unverifiable. It could well be that Kenny Rogers Roasters has the highest per-store sales in chicken franchise history, but in absence of any reference to a published source, its presence in the article was questionable and I thank you for removing it; I hope that the person who put it there will be able to source it and restore it if it is indeed factual. Thanks for being bold. Rlquall 21:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Claire McCaskill

Thanks for your note about the editing discussion. I watched the video last night and it does seem that there was some type of investigation. Any thoughts on whether and how it belongs in the article? I was thinking of putting in a sentence or two in a "personal life" section. I'd appreciate any thoughts you would care to offer. TMS63112 15:27, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the addition. I think that is perfectly sufficient. I agree that my NPOV tag was inaccurate (my tendency to jump the gun on perceived liberal bias). Abacab 21:56, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Incomplete noms

Apparently, the third step of Template:AfD_in_3_steps was missing. The bot detected that these two articles were nominated for deletion, that their discussion pages existed, but these discussion pages were not linked from a "Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/day" page. The completion consisted in placing {{subst:afd3|pagetitle}} to the page relative to the current day, as in [1]. The bot also left the notice to explain why a nomination that was dated October 15 was listed on the log of October 15. Tizio, Caio, Sempronio 12:13, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] U.S. Rep. Tillie K. Fowler article

As you know, I spent some time this week updating the article about Tillie Fowler. FYI - I was Tillie's Chief of Staff during her 8 years in Congress, and then went with her to Holland & Knight where we worked together until she passed away last March.

I would like to change the name of the page from "Tillie Fowler" to "Tillie K. Fowler" For some reason, I can't find the "move page" button anywhere, so I was hoping you could do it. I also put in a move page request, but there seems to be a rather long backlog there.

The reason is:
1. She always preferred to be listed as Tillie K. Fowler
2. Her daughter is also named Tillie Fowler, so the "K." helps distinguish between mother and daughter. That's especially important now that Tillie, the daughter, is Chief of Staff to Florida Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite!

Thanks for your help!

[edit] CONCERNS ABOUT PLAGIARISM

FYI - Below is what I just posted on the talk page for the Tillie article. Just wanted to copy you directly since you've been so helpful. Thanks, David W. Gilliland 03:52, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Posted on the Tillie K. Fowler talk page:

Rest assured, if you read something about Tillie Fowler that is amazingly similar to what I have added to her Wikipedia article, it’s probably because I wrote it too.

I served as Tillie Fowler's Chief of Staff during her eight years in Congress, and then worked with her at Holland & Knight until her death in March of 2005. The article about her that you read on the H&K web site – I wrote it for the firm. At her husband's request, I also authored the obituary published by her family. I also wrote most of her public speeches/statements/testimony. Even her entry in the "Biographical Directory of Congress Entry" which someone linked to her article was written by me.

I might also point out that the passage that raised concerns can also be found within Senate Resolution 342, passed by the state of Georgia honoring Tillie's life I guess I just never considered it "plagiarism" when someone used language that I wrote about Rep. Fowler because it was always more important to me (and her) that what was said about her was accurate.

As I am new to this, I will defer to the experts on how you want to source this. You can be assured that I am the original author of every word I added to this article, and my sourcing is either from my own direct involvement or knowledge of the facts or from Tillie Fowler herself – I assume that having been her top advisor for the past 12 years, I would be considered a credible source. Also, as politicians’ biographies go, in my humble opinion, hers is “neutral, factual, and understated, avoiding both a sympathetic point of view and an advocacy journalism point of view” as required in bios of living persons. It’s pretty much a timeline of her career and activities.
It may be lacking in critical statements or negative stories, but just click on the link (put in there by someone else) to Eleanor Clift’s tribute or the one by Matt Towery, If Congress Had 435 Tillie Fowlers or the one by Congressional scholar Norm Ornstein and you will see that there just isn’t much of it.

Because of my relationship to Rep. Fowler, and because she reviewed and approved the biography I wrote about her that is essentially what I put in the article, I would assume my information could/should be treated as coming from the subject. Per the Wikipedia guidelines, I would contend that the information I added meets the following conditions:

• It meets verifiability, NPOV, and no original research policies.
• It is relevant to the person's notability;
• It is not contentious;
• It is not unduly self-serving;
• There is no reasonable doubt that it was provided by the subject.

I hope this background information helps. I will defer to the experts on how to proceed from here. Just please know that while there are clearly some sourcing questions here, there should be absolutely NO WORRIES about plagiarism. David W. Gilliland 03:52, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Carroll Knicely

Thanks for your contribution to the article. I was at a loss as to what category was appropriate, or, for that matter, where to find it. Wikipedia really needs a searchable database just for the categories.-FateSmiled&DestinyLaughed 13:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tillie K. Fowler

Hi Tommy,

The reason I reverted was that I didn't see how they were being used as references. As I said in my edit summary, could you use some inline citations where they were used? If you're changing the name of the section solely to be in compliance, using inline citations would show you not only adhering to the letter of the new rules, but the spirit. :-) BTW, I offered to help David expand and Wikify the article, but he never sent me any materials he had to use as research. [edit] re: Joan Finney photo

Tommy,

I think it would be a great idea to use the Find-a-Grave photo of Joan Finney in her Article. Unfortunately I don't have the neceassary skills to accomplish that. Here's the name of someone that helps me with techincal things like that: User:JLaTondre

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Michael David 03:03, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

There are two separate issues here: 1) how to load an image; and 2) is this image usable. The first is easy for me to answer. The second is harder.

  1. You need to download the image to your computer. Right click on the image and you should have a "Save image as..." (or "Save picture as..." depending upon your browser) option. Select that and save the file to your computer. You should then open it up & make sure it saved okay. Once that's done, you can upload it to Wikipedia. Wikipedia:Uploading images provides instructions. If after reading that you still have questions, let me know & I'll try to answer them.
  2. Copyright status & fair use can be a difficult subject. I'm not an expert on it. I'd recommend reading Wikipedia:Image use policy and Wikipedia:Fair use. If those pages don't answer your questions, they should provide links to places where you can ask your questions and get a knowledgeable answer.

Sorry that I cannot help more than that. -- JLaTondre 13:10, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi,

I just emailed the person who submitted the Joan Finney photo to the Find-a-Grave site. I asked him if there were any copyright issues if her photo was added to Wikipedia. I'm waiting for his answer. I'll let you know what he says.

Michael David 23:05, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Once I get the proper permission to use the photo, if I can't figure out how to upload it (I'm pretty computer challenged myself) I'm sure we'll be able to find someone who will upload it for us. I'll keep ypu posted.
Michael David 00:02, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi,
Yes, the person who uploaded the photo replied to my email. In it he said that he wasn't the one who took the photo, but he thought it would be OK to use it. I asked a person who knows about copyright stuff and he said that we probably needed the actual photographers permission to use it. So I emailed the people at Find-a-Grave to find out who actually took the picture so I could get in touch with him. I am still waiting for an answer from them. As soon as I know more I will let you know right away. Sorry I didn't write you about this sooner, but I thought I'd wait until I had more concrete information.
I hope to be back in touch soon.

[edit] WPbio assessments

Hey. I noticing that you're adding a crapload of assessment requests up on Wikiproject Bioraphy. While fine, as that's what that's for, you're free to add in the assessments yourself if you have a good idea of what it should be. Most of the ones I've ated so far look pretty obvious to me, though some are harder. I'll do the ones I can that you're putting up, the rest others can deal with.--Wizardman 05:14, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I just noticed that those are all articles you created, so in that case nevermind, it makes sense to add them there so that there's no bias. Sorry abotu that.--Wizardman 05:15, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Your actions are fine, I just didn;t originally understand why you were submitting all of them. I get it now, so you can continue, I have no problem with it.--Wizardman 05:44, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
